Flipped By: Wendelin Van Draanen Genre: Realistic Fiction Published: 2001 By: Jessie Nguyen

Setting The setting took place at Julianna’s small house and Bryce’s large and perfect house. The tall sycamore tree The peaceful community of Greenhaven If the setting was different than the story wouldn’t be good and wouldn’t match or fit together.

Characters Bryce Loski- Physical Characteristics- Blond Hair, Blue eyes, well-combed hair Ambitious, charming, deceitful He likes to be successful in everyway he can and all the girls likes him. He is deceitful to his family and Juli when he told that the Bakers are not hard-working and tells Juli that the eggs were broken. Julianna Baker- Physical characteristics- Brown hair, long hair, freckles Ambitious, brilliant, determined She likes to good grades in everything and is very smart and thinks things through. If she wants something she is determined to get it like she wants Bryce..

Conflict I think this is a man vs. self for Bryce because he later on struggles to find out does he like Juli Baker? Is she really worth it? This is man vs. man and man vs. self for Juli because she had to compete to get Bryce and after going through all that trouble she realizes that he is not worth it.

Summary of Plot Bryce Loski has moved in to a new neighborhood and meets an annoying girl( he thinks she is) named Julianna Baker. While Julianna(Juli) wants to know when will she ever get her kiss, Bryce has done many things for her not to go crazy for him and wonders when will she ever stop. As they grow older, Bryce begins to see that Juli is very pretty, and Juli begins to see that Bryce isn’t everyting she thought he was.

Theme Theme- Don’t judge people by their looks. “Do you know why the Bakers haven’t fixed up the yard until now?”-Chet Pg 109 “Why? Sure. They’re trash that’s why. They’ve got a beat up house, two beat up cars, and a beat up yard.’’ – Rick 109 “ Because your backyard is, like, covered in turds. I mean look at your place Juli.- Bryce Pg 98

Point of View First person in Juli’s and Bryce’s perspective. It tells how both characters are feeling and thinking through their own mind and what they see. If the author changed the point of view than it would change how they characters would feel about each other. This point of view helps readers imagine how the character feels, thinks, and what they actually see.

Symbolism The sycamore tree symbolizes strength, and freedom. It represents that because the tree is strong and when you are up there, no one can tell you what to do. It affects the story because Juli loves this tree and it makes her feel magical and happy.

Recommendation This is a really good book, and I enjoyed it a lot. It is really worth reading because you can relate to the book a lot.
