Overview Transient BCE Extension to Proxy MIPv6 base protocol for handover optimization Joint effort to specify an efficient solution from individual contributions – draft-blume-netlmm-secondary-bce-proxymip6ho-00 – draft-liebsch-netlmm-intertech-proxymip6ho-01 – draft-muhanna-netlmm-pmipv6-support-transient-coa-01 Provides optimization for inter-MAG handoff, e.g. for 3GPP use cases
Design goals Low added complexity Avoid new messages and protocol interfaces –No additional SAs required Meet requirements for a variety of handover cases Approach: –Allow utilizing both previous and new connectivity as available during HO –Synchronize downlink path switch with HO characteristics
Use Cases HO with previous downlink still available –Controlled late path switch –Dual radio (inter-technology) –Single radio with RAT specific forwarding re-use existing handover optimization Handling of late uplink packets after HO –Support forwarding of packets on the fly from pMAG after HO
Characteristics of a transient BCE Single option attached to Proxy BU (new MAG – LMA) Advanced BCE management on LMA –Maintains temporarily 2 forwarding entries in the MN‘s BCE Ensures forwarding of uplink packets from both links (pMAG and nMAG) Enables controlled forwarding of downlink packets (pMAG or nMAG) to suit various handover cases Suitable for inter-technology and intra-technology handover

Summary Transient BCE as simple extension to PMIPv6 base protocol –Re-uses existing protocol interfaces –Utilizes new message option: Transient Binding option Smooth migration in PMIPv6 deployment –Only involves nMAG and LMA –No interaction of pMAG and nMAG –No new SAs required, re-use existing SAs between MAG and LMA Tailors U-plane handover procedure to various scenarios –Avoids dropping of packets on previous link –Avoids buffering on target link –Doesn‘t require synchronisation of MN and network Complementary to PFMIP approach –Allows co-existence to suit inter- as well as intra-technology handovers
