Solving Equations with the Variable on Each Side 2.4
Objective Today you will solve equations with the variable on each side.
To solve an equation with the variable on both sides, you MUST put the variables on one side and the constants on the other.
Solve: 2 + 5k = 3k – 6 - 3k = -3k 2 + 2k = = - 2 2k = -8 ÷2 ÷2 k = -4 CHECK YOUR WORK!! 2 + 5k = 3k – (-4) = 3(-4) – (-20) = -12 – = -18
Your turn! 3w + 2 = 7w -3w = -3w 2 = 4w ÷ 4 = ÷ 4 ½ = w CHECK YOUR WORK!! 3w + 2 = 7w 3(½) + 2 = 7(½) 3.5 = 3.5
30m – 18 = 8m m = - 8m 22m – 18 = = m = 22 ÷22 = ÷22 m = 1
Your turn! 8x – 10 = 18 – 6x +6x = + 6x 14x – 10 = = x = 28 ÷14 = ÷14 x = 2
Find Special Solutions 5x + 5 = 15x – 12 – 10x 5x + 5 = 5x – 12 -5x = -5x 5 ≠ - 12 NO SOLUTION
Your turn 7x + 5x – 5 = x 12x – 5 = x (same thing on both sides) 0 = 0
