Ten Steps to Proactive Media Planning 1.Have a plan for media management. 2.Practice crisis interviews. 3.Take part in mock drills.

4.Review and update company policy. 5.Train as many employees as possible. 6.Practice crisis interviews! 7.Maintain liaison with local media reps.

8.Have sites selected for media staging areas. 9.Make sure a system of notification is in place. 10.Practice crisis interviews!!

On-Scene Management Tips Media Staging Considerations Where do I put them? Who will have access inside the facility? How close will they be able to get? How will I keep my eye on them?

Dealing With The Incident React immediately. Notify company officials. Determine call-out status. Confirm back-up systems.

Prior To Your Arrival Gather as much information as possible. Provide instruction to staff on site (make sure they know the policy). Notify security as to where to stage the media until you get there. Advise security what to say until you get there.

Upon Your Arrival Greet media reps. See that they are properly staged. Brief them if you know anything. Establish ground rules.

Roco’s Top 20 Crisis Communications Rules 1.Tell the truth, even when it hurts. 2.Talk to be understood. 3.Avoid technical jargon. 4.Expect to be nervous.

5.Think of the interview as a conversation. 6.Don't be afraid to correct yourself if you have made an error. 7.Don't assume the reporter knows anything about the topic. 8.Accommodate interview requests ASAP.

9.Tell it all; tell it fast. 10.Control rumors. 11.Do not withhold information (except death notifications). 12.Coordinate with public safety officials. 13.Control site access.

14.Stay on the record. 15.Do not argue with reporters. 16.Avoid saying “No Comment.“ 17.If you don't know, say so.

18.Know when to shut up. 19.Keep track of what you say. 20.Practice crisis interviews.
