KOREA “The Forgotten War” 1950-53

Korea- The division After WWII, Korea is split into two states at the 38th parallel, Japanese troops north of the 38th parallel surrender to the Soviet; Japanese troops south of the parallel surrender to the Americans Two nations developed; one communist = North Korea and one democratic = South Korea

1949 Soviets and US leave Korea Both North and South Korea claim ownership of the entire country June 1950, North Korea invades South Korea American reaction: Oh no, another Asian country about to fall to communism! NO! Truman decides to take military action

Korea divided at the 38th parallel This war went back and forth with no one winning for three years

War This war lasts 3 years, 1950-1953, and is a stalemate (no side wins outright control of the entire country) USA stopped communism from spreading to South Korea To this day Korea is divided: North Korea is communist and South Korea is democratic…divided along the 38th parallel line (DMZ) US troops are still stationed in South Korea

Korea Today South Korea North Korea Still divided at the 38th parallel Modern society Democracy- Presidential republic Developed country w/ high standard of living 15th largest economy in the world North Korea closed society People have no freedoms Single-party communist state Supreme leader- Kim Jong-Un

New Leader Kim Jong Il died in Dec. 2011 His three sons were not prepared to take over No one knew who would lead North Korea…Youngest son, Kim Jong Un, has taken over…what will he be like? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZsVP2WoE9E (2:58 Crying) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd9YEISLlJk (2:13 Mourning or Not?)

STOP

STOP

American Intervention Truman orders naval and air support for South Korea 16 other nations sent troops to Korea to support the South Koreans (90% Americans) General MacArthur

WAR At first, NK had pushed UN and SK troops back to Pusan MacArthur counter-attacks Americans go on the offensive into North Korea Chinese troops invade to support the North Koreans UN and SK pushed back pasted Seoul again 2 year stalemate

MacArthur vs. Truman General MacArthur wants to invade China and use atomic bombs US President Truman says NO Attacking China (friends with the Soviets) would start WWIII UN and SK regain land up the 38th parallel MacArthur wants full-scale war, told only to have limited-war

MacArthur’s Insubordination Mac tries to go over Truman’s head 1951 Truman relieves Mac of his command Mac addresses Congress- “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.”

How did war end? Stalemate in Korea July 1951- peace talks begin Cease-fire line and DMZ zone July 1953, armistice ending the war, but no peace treaty Agreement was a stalemate Communism had been contained without WWIII, but Korea was still divided today with communism only in the North and our US troops protecting the South

Effects of the Korean War 54,000 American lives Cost btw. $67 billion Rejection of the Dem. Party and election of Rep. Dwight D. Eisenhower Increased Americans fear of communism Beginning of spy hunts
