Presentation transcript:

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Assembly and testing facility. Sasha Milov March 9, 2005 Sequence of operations Glove Box Evaporator Other needs Testing

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Sequence of operations:  Mechanical construction of the HBD volume  Gas leak tests  Framing GEMs  Testing GEMs  Preparation of the of the CsI photocathodes  CsI quantum efficiency tests  Triple GEM amplification tests  Detector assembly  Electronics assembly  Gas leak tests  Integration into PHENIX  Commissioning  Operation

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Assembly site.  DC assembly site:  Spacious  Not very clean, but can be done “reasonably” clean.  “Reasonably” is still not good enough for CsI  Need a Glove Box

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, What do we want form a Glove Box.  Glove box parameters considered:  approximately 2.5m long 1.3m wide, 1.5m tall  Three areas inside for Assembly, Storage and Preparation.  Humidity control system inside the box  ~250 l/h flushing gas system  Full size door on one side  Antechamber on the other side, preferably sustaining vacuum  Electrical and gas communications in/out  Detector positioning system inside the box  Shelves, boxes etc  Quotes:  There are preliminary quotes form several companies (Mbraun, Innovative Technology, CoyLab etc…) ranging about $40k before negotiations.  A “do-it-yourself” quote is probably slightly cheaper that that

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Glove Box. Glove Box used at WIS (CoyLab)   “mbroun” Company, (and several others)

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Evaporator (SUNYSB).  PRO:  Available, Close to assembly site.  Working, and was capable of producing several small photocathodes.  Can produce full size HBD photocathode (one per cycle)  CONS:  Originally a “target” evaporator not “optical”, therefore is not really clean.  Major problem is unreliability and diffusion pump which may send oil back into the vessel.  Expected to be significantly upgraded for HBD project.

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Evaporator (JLab option).  PRO:  Rolls-Royce class evaporator.  Capable of producing several HBD photocathodes in one go.  No exposure to the air.  CsI QE control “in situ”  Cooperative crew.  CONS:  Not a domestic one.  Can be used but not on a regular basis

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Other needs.  Gas system:  Needs quite simple gas system (cylinder  reducer  exhaust) for N 2 /Ar and CF4. Something we can put together in the tent at SUNYSB.  Other:  Tools, soldering station, consumables etc.  Electronics test bench  Vessel for triple GEM module testing.

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Testing I.  FR4 prototype (BNL prototype):  Under gas flow right now, H 2 O and O 2 readings in the morning: 19ppm and 12ppm after 5 days of N2 flushing.  Can be ready for LEGs test as well.  Major purpose is to study detector with realistic materials and electronics.  Stainless steel prototype (WIS prototype):  Arrived to the US.  Requires CsI photocathode to be put on and assembly.  Will be ready for LEGs test scheduled at the end of March.  Major purpose to measure N 0 (N photoelectrons ).

Sasha Milov EC/DC meeting March 9, Testing II.  Full scale prototype (WIS):  Mechanically almost complete  To be shipped here after gas test and HV tests  Final assembly exercise  Gas testing  Gain aging tests  CsI QE degradation tests  Electronics testing  Major purpose: study detector in final configuration.
