How Should Northwestern Go Green? Team B

Team Members  EmilyDerrick  KristyMadeline  MylesShelby  Brandon  Dakota  Jeff

Green Project  Research ways that Northwestern Lehigh School District can: 1.Cut energy costs 2.Become more eco-friendly

Topics  Cut our paper consumption  Cut our energy consumption  Alternative fuel options for our buses  Alternative energy options for our school buildings

Cutting Paper and Saving Trees

Cutting Paper  District-wide use 1040 cases a year  5000 sheets of paper per case  $27.57 per case

Paper Cont.  Increase spending by $2350 next year  Spend $30,000 a year  Use over 5,400,000 sheets of paper a year

More Paper  Suggesting 25% cut  Saves 1.3 million sheets  Saves $7,000 a year

How to Cut  Purchase Textbooks  Can save 9000 sheets by buying textbooks for two classes  Stop sending memos  Send s and have replies

Green Paper  One tree produces 8,333 pieces of paper  Our district uses about 650 trees a year  By reducing paper use by 25% we would save 162 trees per year

Saving Money and Energy

Cutting Energy  Focused on electrical cuts  4 ways to cut electricity: 1.Shut off Laptops 2.Shut off Desktops 3.Turn off Lights 4.Turn off TVs

Laptops  Most laptops stay in sleep mode  Use 2.4 watts per hour  450 Student Laptops  Save around $466 by shutting them off

Desktops  5 computer labs  30 computers per lab  72 watts(idle mode) per hour

Desktop Savings  50% Left on Idle: Save $2,000 a year Save 130 KW a year  100% Left on Idle: Save $4,000 a year Save 260 KW a year

Lights  Shut off lights 4 hrs. a day  42 Lights per class  40 Watts an hour

Lights Savings  One Teacher: Save $120 a year 6.7 KW a year  100 Teachers: Save $12,000 a year 670 KW a year

Televisions  Shut off except: First thing in the morning Over Flexes  Show Morning show, slides, flex show  100 TVs (approximately)  165 Watts an hour

Savings  During School Day: Save 91 KW per day Save $1,600 a year  20% of TVs left on after school: Save 79 KW per day Save $1,400 a year

Total Electrical Savings  Shut off laptops, desktops, lights, and TVs  Save $20,900 a year(high school)  Save $83,000 a year (District)

Natural Gas and Transportation

Alternative Fuels  40 Buses  Avg. Bus Age= 8.5 Years  7 MPG  Diesel Cost- $2.23 per gallon  $5,000 Per Bus a year (fuel costs)

Natural Gas  Costs: Bus Costs $130,000  Savings: Save around $3,500 in Fuel Costs Costs $1.10 Per Equivalent of Diesel Gallon

Other Savings  Grants:  50% Grant: Save $65,000 Pay $65,000  75% Grant: Save $97,500 Pay $32,500 Replace Oldest Buses: Save around $40,000 in repairs per year

Green Buses  Natural Gas Cuts Emissions 90%  Problems with Diesel Increases Asthma in Children Increases chance of cancer by 46%

Alternative Energy

Solar Energy  Stores 193 KW per Hour  1.6 Million KW stored per year  4.2 Million KW used in District (per year)  Stores energy even when sun isn’t out (cloudy or night)

Costs  $1.5 Million per panel  Pays for itself in 3 years  $500,000 per Year for three Years  Lasts for 40 years

Savings  Doesn’t actually cost $500,000  Saves around $169,000 a year(energy stored)  Net cost around $331,000 per year

Grants  50% Grant: Save $165,000 Pay $165,000  75% Grant: Save $248,000 Pay $83,000

TOTAL POSSIBLE SAVINGS TOTAL POSSIBLE SAVINGS (District Wide) Ways to save Savings in One Year Savings in 5 YearsSavings in 10 Years Turn off TV's $ 14, $ 74, $ 148, Reduce Paper by 25% $ 7, $ 37, $ 74, Turn off Laptops $ 1, $ 9, $ 18, Turn off Desktops $ 18, $ 93, $ 186, Turn off Lights 4 hrs a day $ 48, $ 241, $ 483, Fuel Savings $ 3, $ 17, $ 34, Solar Savings (After 3 Years) $ 169, $ 845, $ 1,690, TOTALS $ 263, $ 1,318, $ 2,637,498.60

Carbon Footprint  Approximate Numbers

Footprint Cont.  Shows need to be green  If pay off our Carbon Footprint than it would cost $50,000  13 Million Lbs. of CO 2 (per year) 6500 Tons of CO 2 (per year) 267,000 Trees 486,000 Charcoal Barbecues

Conclusion  Places to save  Huge Payoff with no cost  Hope to influence some changes in the next couple of years
