Amar Michel, Romain Wairan, Francois Gleizes 20/02/2012 Conversion table Isco88 => Isco08 Application for the French LFS ( 2010 ) and for LFS 2009 (21 countries)

Date Titre du diaporama 2 Work conducted by R. Warnan et L Meuric (Insee) Variables used : - Isco 88(Com) 3 digits - supervisory function (SUPV) -Highest level of education instead of qualification (QUAL) - Size of firm (NBSAL) ; - Status (Employed or Self Employed) - Activity

Date Titre du diaporama 3 Limits of this exercise The rules for construction of ISCO-88 and ISCO-08 are similar. But EU version (Isco88(Com)) has introduced some specificities (in particular, for executives and professionals from the Public Service). Otherwise, with the theoretical conversion table ( ISCO-88 => ISCO- 08), there are many major groups change (upgrades or downgrades) which can not be realized without qualification. In addition, some theoretical changes could not be treated due to the lack of large enough or precise ancillary variables. Finally, code quality produced with conversion table is imperfect.

Date Titre du diaporama 4 What is provided to users - a commented computer program (SAS) - The transcoded « profession » is recorded in a variable called ISCO08. -Some Comments are made. - An Excel file allows the rules of the conversion table to be read more easily.

Date Titre du diaporama 5 Usefulness of ancillary variables Activity Occupations of group 1, 2 or 3 are often divided according to the sector in ISCO-08. Activity is also sometimes used to distinguish between white collar and blue collar workers. Size of firm It serves to distinguish the small employers (less than 10 in group 5) from the others (group 1).

Date Titre du diaporama 6 Usefulness of ancillary variables (suite) Supervisory function With this variable (SUPV) some people are upgraded to a higher group. For example: – Clerical support workers (group 4) can become « Business and administration associate professionals » (group 33) – Some Sales workers (group 52) can become “shop supervisors » – Some workers (essentially the most skilled ones) can be recorded in group 31 and become Manufacturing supervisors (3122)

Date Titre du diaporama 7 Usefulness of ancillary variables (suite) Status Qualification In ISCO-08 there are 4 levels for qualification, associated with different major groups. We do not have this variable in LFS. Also, we use Hatlevel.
