 Why is career exploration important?  Provides you with a focus for your future  Allows you to set goals  Shapes your personality  What classes you take  What people you will meet

Career Exploration  There are 49.5 million elementary & high school students in America  3,807,693 (3.8 million) students/grade level K-12  71% of all high school students graduate  78% of white students graduate  56% of African American students graduate  52% of Hispanic students graduate  Only 34% of high school graduates actually leave high school with an adequate skill set.  40% white  23% African American  20% Hispanic

Career Exploration  What do students do after high school?  45% of high school graduates enroll in a 4 year university  Only half (26% of population) graduate  More women go to college than men  Men make more money  Left-handed men make the most  26% more than right-handed men  No difference between left & right-handed women  31.3% of high school graduates enroll in other post secondary schools  2% join the military  22% --- Work, have children, do nothing, stare off into space, etc…

High School Student Options  Option A  You could dropout of school  My Dad did  Over a million students who enter the ninth grade fail to graduate with their peers  7,000 students dropout each day  Problems with this option?  Significantly diminish your chances of finding a good job  Average income for a high school dropout is $18,900/year = $17,000 after taxes  You could buy a Ford Focus  Huge burden on community, states, & country
