Physical Features The United States has many physical features. Physical means it is part of the land. This is a physical map.

Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon is a deep gorge in northwestern Arizona. It is about 1 mile deep and 277 miles long. Scientists say that the Colorado River formed the canyon by cutting through layers of rock over millions of years. The colors in the rocks make the Grand Canyon a beautiful sight.

Grand Canyon Find the state of Arizona and mark the location of the Grand Canyon on your map. The Grand Canyon

Salton Sea A “Salty” Sea The Salton Sea is the largest lake in the state of California. It is a large depression about 240 feet below sea level. The Colorado River flooded over to fill it and made the Salton Sea. The water is very salty. The Salton Sea

Great Salt Lake An Enormous Lake The Great Salt Lake is even bigger than the Salton Sea. Located in Utah, it is the largest lake in the western United States. Because it is so salty, people can float in the Great Salt Lake quite easily. The Great Salt Lake

Mojave Desert The Mojave Desert covers about 25,000 square miles in southeastern California. It has flat desert areas and some mountain ranges. And it’s hot-normal summer temperatures in Death Valley are around 120 degrees. The Mojave Desert

Quick Check What state is home to the Grand Canyon? Most of the Mojave Desert is located in what state? The Great Salt Lake is located in what state? The Salton Sea is the largest lake located in what state?

Man-Made Places Man-made places are often remembered for their place in American history. These places were created by man. These are all man made places.
