1 Important US Locations
SS5G1 The student will locate important places in the United States. Locate important physical features; include the Grand Canyon, Salton Sea, Great Salt Lake, and Mojave Desert. Locate important man-made places; include the Chisholm Trail; Pittsburgh, PA; Gettysburg, PA; Kitty Hawk, NC; Pearl Harbor, HI; and Montgomery, AL.

2 Salton Sea, CA The Salton Sea is a saline (salt) lake in southeastern California. The Salton Sea was formed between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado River burst through poorly built irrigation controls south of Yuma, Arizona. The flood went on for over a year. The Salton Sea is currently 35 miles by 15 miles and can be as large as 40 miles by almost 20 miles in particularly wet years. It has an average depth of 29.9 feet and, at its deepest, is 51 feet. The bed of the Salton Sea is only five feet higher than the lowest spot in Death Valley. :

5 Grand Canyon, AZ The Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. The canyon was formed by the mighty Colorado River around 5-6 million years ago by the destructive earth process of erosion. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide.

8 Pearl Harbor, HI The Naval base on Pearl Harbor, HI was attacked by Japan on December 7th, 1941. It was a surprise attack by Japan in an effort to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering wth military action Japan had planned against the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. The base was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese fighter planes in two waves. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged and all but the USS Arizona were raised and six were returned to battle in WW2. 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 other were wounded.

11 Chisholm Trail- Texas The Chisholm Trail was a cattle trail named for the Native American trader, Jesse Chisholm. The Chisholm Trail carried 600,000 cattle in the year 1871. The cattle trail’s purpose was to move cattle to the railways in Kansas to be shipped east for a higher sale. The trail began in San Antonio ,TX and ended in Abilene, TX

13 Montgomery, AL On December 1st, 1955, in Montgomery Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus. She was arrested and fined. The boycott of public buses by African Americans began following Parks’ arrest and lasted 381 days.

15 Kitty Hawk, NC The Wright Brothers took their first flight in Kitty Hawk, NC on December 17th, 1903. The first motorized flight lasted for 12 seconds. The Wright Brother's airplane is displayed in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

18 Gettysburg, PA Gettysburg, PA is located in Pennsylvania near the Virginia. The battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War served as the turning point of the war in favor of the Union. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest day in the war, resulting between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle, the most costly in US history.

23 Great Salt Lake, UT

24 Great Salt Lake, UT Great Salt lake is located in Northern Utah and is the largest salt lake west of the Mississippi River. The Great Salt Lake is 75 miles long and 35 miles wide. The Great Salt Lake is a remnant of a great ice age lake.

27 Mojave Desert, CA-NV The Mojave desert is located in California and Nevada. The Mojave Desert has the lowest elevation and the highest temperature (134 degrees Fahrenheit) Death Valley has THE LOWEST elevation in NORTH AMERICA at 280 feet below sea level and is located in the Mojave Desert.
