What is a Podcast? Digital media by which a user can watch and listen to audio on a computer. ChalkTalk Coursecast Profcast

Outline of Working Session 1.Podcasts in Higher Education 2.Podcasting 101 –Hardware and Software 3.Activity I: What will I say? 4.Activity II: How do I make a podcast? 5.Participant Discussion 6.Next Steps

Podcasts in Higher Education Supplementary course materials, class notes, and examples Remedial or refresher lessons How-to-Tutorials Samples of student work

Why Podcast? Faculty Point of View Innovative Technology Numerous Student Benefits –Clarify misconceptions –Reinforce key skills –Enhance understanding of key concepts –See alternative perspective (solution strategies) –Free class time for inquiry-based activities –Promote critical thinking

Why Podcast? Student Point of View Provide introduction to material Organize weekly activities/lessons Support independent learning Anytime/anywhere access Enable deeper engagement than with notes Develop more positive attitude toward instruction

Student Feedback I used the Podcast in my prep for the upcoming exam. It is a wonderful review and basically is more class time outside of class. I love the podcast! I used the Quiz Solution Podcasts this week by first viewing my quiz and how I worked through the problems, then I viewed how Dr. Hoar worked through the problems and noted any significant moves toward completing the problems with which I struggled. At first, I just watched and listened. Then, the second time around I compared the way Dr. Hoar solved the problem to the way I did and saw where I made some of my mistakes. I moved the cursor along without sound so I could track the steps I took with the steps Dr. Hoar took while he worked it out. If I didn't understand what he did, I put the sound on.
