1855-Technology allowed scientists like John Snow to trace diseases like chlorea for the first time. People start to demand cleaner drinking water and more sanitary conditions because of epidemics of chlorea and typhoid. Industrial Revolution (1830 – 1890)

People like Teddy Roosevelt start to preserve large amounts of land and create the first wilderness preserves. The population wants to improve living conditions, so they start to demand reform of sanitation, food service, drinking water, and polluting industries. Progressive Era (1890 – 1920)

CCC is founded during the Great Depression. Deadly smog pollution affects people in Pennsylvania, London, LA, and New York convince people that there is an air pollution crisis. The first international committee on air pollution is held in 1955 Roaring 20’s, Depression, WWII and the Fifties (1920 – 1960)

An essay written by ecologist Garrett Hardin warns of the dangers of unrestricted industry. The Environmental Protection agency (EPA) is formed. Cars release less air pollution as more cars use unleaded gasoline. Three Mile Island disaster Sewage treatment program gets pollution out of rivers The Sixties and Seventies (1960 – 1980)
