What is Wind Energy? Wind energy is when we make wind turbines to harness the wind in certain areas of the world and the wind makes kinetic energy so we can use it. Wind energy has been used since the 19 th century while in Europe to crush the grain that they collected. Then in the 20 th century in the mid-west, farmers used metal turbines to start collecting energy. The biggest wind turbines can power up to 600 U.S. homes and the use of wind energy has gone up 25%.

How does the energy get transported to the Consumer? When the wind hits the blades it turns a shaft in the nacelle (the big box on the top of the turbine.) Then inside the nacelle it goes into a certain speed and the generator which is made up of magnetic fields converts rotational energy to electrical energy. The power that comes out of the turbine goes to a transformer which makes electrical energy from the generator around 700 volts. For the right voltage system it can take around 33,000 volts. Then the national grid transmits the energy across the country.

How the consumer uses the Energy? One wind turbine in your backyard can give you electricity to power your home and pay the surplus to his electric company. There is no electric bill or extra income form the electric company. Also it is good for the environment because no fossil fuels are being burned
