Lesson 3-10b Related Rates

Objectives Use knowledge of derivatives to solve related rate problems

Vocabulary Related rate problems – Problems where variables vary according to time and their change with respect to time can be modeled with an equation using derivatives.

Related Rates 1.Let t = elapsed time and draw a diagram of the given situation for t > 0. Be sure to draw the picture carefully and accurately and include all of the variables in the problem. Assign appropriate variables to the other quantities that vary with t and label the diagram appropriately. Some dimensions in the problem remain fixed as time passes. Label these as constants in the diagram. Other information defines the point in time at which you are to calculate the rate of change. Do not label these dimensions as constants as they vary with time. 2.Identify what is given and what is wanted in terms of the established variables. 3.Write a general equation relating the variables. 4.Differentiate this equation with respect to t. 5.Substitute the known quantities identified in step 2 into your equation and find the solution to the problem.

Example 1 A cube of ice is melting uniformly so that the sides of cube are being reduced by 0.01 in/min. Find the rate of change of the volume when the cube has a side of 2 in. Base Equation: Cube Vol V = s³ V = s³ looking for dV/dt dV/dt = 3s² (ds/dt) dV/dt = 3(2)² (0.01) = 0.12 cu in / min

Example 2 A stone is thrown into a pond creating a circle with an expanding radius. How fast is the distributed area expanding when the radius of the circle is 10 feet and is expanding at 1 foot per second? Base Equation: Area of circle, A = πr² A = πr² looking for dA/dt (dA/dt) = π[ 2r (dr/dt)] dA/dt = 2π (10) (1)] dA/dt = 20π = ft² / sec

Example 3 Sand is pouring into a conical pile at the rate of 25 cubic inches per minute. The radius is always twice the height. Find the rate at which the radius of the base is increasing when the pile is 18 inches high. (Note: V = (1/3) πr²h) Base Equation: V = (1/3) πr²h r = 2h dr/dt = 2 dh/dt (dV/dt) = ⅓π[ 2rh (dr/dt) + r² (dh/dt)] 25 = ⅓π[ 2(2h)h (dr/dt) + (2h)² (1/2dr/dt)] 25 = ⅓π[ 2(18)² (dr/dt) + (36)² (1/2dr/dt)] dr/dt = 25 / (⅓π[ 2(18)² + ½ (36)²]) dr/dt = in/min

Example 4 A television camera 2000 feet from the launch pad at ground level is filming the lift-off of the space shuttle. The shuttle is rising at a rate of 1000 feet per second. Example 5 A stone is dropped into a lake causing circular waves where the radius is increasing at a constant rate of 5 meters per second. At what rate is the circumference changing when the radius is 4 meters? (Note: C = 2πr) Base Equation: Circumference of circle, C = 2πr C = 2πr looking for dC/dt (dC/dt) = 2π(dr/dt) dC/dt = 2π (5) dC/dt = 10π = m / sec

Example 6 A boat is pulled toward a pier by means of a cable. If the boat is 12 feet below the level of the pier and the cable is being pulled in at a rate of 4 feet per second, how fast is the boat moving toward the pier when 13 feet of cable is out? c = 13 h = 12 dc ---- = -4 ft/s dt c w Base Equation: Pythagorean Thrm c² = w² + h² 2c (dc/dt) = 2w(dw/dt) + 2h(dh/dt) 2(13) (-4) = 2(5)(dw/dt) + 2(12)(0) 13² = w² + 12² w = 5 dw/dt = 2(13)(-4) / 2(5) = ft/sec
