8 II. Applications Guidelines for Solving Related Rate Problems 1. Identify all given quantities and quantities to be determined. Make a sketch and label your diagram 2.Write an equation involving the variables whose rates or change either are given or are to be determined. Volume Formulas (Inside Cover of Book) Area Formulas (Inside Cover of Book) Pythagorean Theorem (when you sketch looks like a RT Δ) 3. Using implicit Differentiation, differentiate with respect to time. 4. Substitute Values as necessary. Then solve for the required rate of change.

9 II. Applications Example 6: A pebble is dropped into a calm pond, causing ripples in the form of concentric circles. The radius (r) of the outer ripple is increasing at a constant rate of 1 foot per second. When the radius is 4 feet, at what rate is the total area (A) of the disturbed water changing? What do I know: What do I need to find: Differentiate: Substitute: The total area of the disturbed water is changing at 25.13 ft 2 /sec.

10 II. Applications Example 7: Air is being pumped into a spherical at a rate of 4.5 cubic feet per minute. Find the rate of change of the radius when the radius is 2 feet. What do I know: What do I need to find: Differentiate: Substitute: The rate of change of the radius when the radius is 2 feet is 0.09 ft/min.
