SNOOP Policy Forum April 12 th 2013 Tallinn Anu Keltaniemi Björn Grönholm

SNOOP  Background in earlier projects like ShipNODeff  Previously, little consensus on the amount of emissions caused in the Baltic Sea by ships or their effects  The SNOOP project started in 2009  Several similar projects within the field of focus such as BSR InnoShip  Nine project partners from Finland and Estonia  City of Turku (LP)  Estonian Environment Research Centre  Finnish Meteorological Institute  HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority  Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences  Metropolia University of Applied Sciences  Tallinn University of Technology, Marine Systems Institute  University of Turku, Centre for Maritime Studies  Åbo Akademi University

SNOOP  Objective: to find out how ship exhaust emissions (NOx, SOx, PM, CO and CO2) are effecting the marine environment and human health in port areas  Produce important information for the decision makers about Baltic Sea shipping and its emissions, i.e. by  Producing AIS data analysis for HELCOM  By developing future scenarios for the emissions of shipping

SNOOP  Air quality measurements  In the ports of Helsinki, Turku and Tallinn  Islands of Aegna and Harmaja  On board of vessels/ships  By aeroplane  Results of the measurements have been used throughout the project

SNOOP Project result in;  Scenarios for ship originated atmospheric emissions until 2040  Marine impact model  Estimation of emissions on human health  Air quality data  Several scientific papers  Three Policy Forums

Today we will look at the latest results, discuss with a broader audience and look forward!
