1) What was the Space Race?  The “race” to be the country noted for sending the most astronauts and satellites to space and explore the moon.

5) Why did his speech take everyone by surprise?  It took everyone by surprise because Americans had never even sent an astronaut or satellite into orbit, not to mention the moon!

6) What was the American response to Kennedy’s challenge?  The Kennedy Space Center was built in Florida and Mission Control was established in Houston, Texas.

7) Who was the First American to orbit Earth?  In Feb. 1962, almost one year later, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth.
