Bono

Bono is the lead singer of Irish rock band U2, who have sold 110 million albums worldwide and won dozens of international music awards.

He has used his fame to draw attention to Africa and the crises of poverty and HIV/AIDS, and get access to the world¹s most powerful politicians.

He first became involved in issues affecting Africa as part of the Live Aid/We Are the World response to the Ethiopian Famine in 1984.

After acting as spokesperson for the Jubilee 2000 Drop the Debt Movement, Bono co- founded DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) in 2002.

DATA raises public awareness and puts pressure on the US and European governments to increase resources for Africa and improve their policies towards African countries.

In the US, DATA is a founding member of the ONE campaign to make poverty history which has more than 2 million supporters, the largest anti-poverty lobby in America.

In 2005, Bono was named Time Person of the year along with Bill and Melinda Gates for his work on Africa.

He lives in Dublin, Ireland—where he was raised—with his wife and four children

In Ireland during his childhood, the Protestants from Northern Ireland and the Catholics from Ireland were involved in an atrocious religious war that resulted in the deaths of thousands of people.

“Sunday, Bloody Sunday” is specifically about those religious wars.

Because of what he witnessed “religion” do to his country, Bono despises “religion.”

However, he is a man of deep Christian convictions. His lyrics and his public addresses reflect these Christian convictions.
