Presentation transcript:

Response to Intervention (RtI) Brief Overview of the PA Model* ALL RtI provides ALL students with: Standards-aligned concepts and competencies Data-driven instruction and The additional support needed to achieve strong academic results. *based on the PDE Publication, “Response to Intervention (RtI): What it is and what it’s not!”

Goal of RtI: “To improve student achievement using research-based interventions matched to the instructional need and level of the student.”

RTI Defined- an early intervening strategy that carries dual meaning in our state. RtI is comprehensive, multi-tiered, standards-aligned and enables early identification and intervention for students at academic or behavioral risk. At a later date, RtI may be considered as one alternative for identification of students with learning disabilities.

Response to Intervention (RtI): What it is -and- What it’s not! Data driven process Within a standards-aligned instructional system Led by general education, coordinated with all other services (Sp. Ed., ESL, Reading 1st, School Improvement, …) Provides immediate SRB instructional intervention & monitors response Diagnostic alternative to identifying SLD* Diagnostic alternative to identifying SLD* Pre-referral system Individual teacher Classroom Special education program Additional period of reading instruction Separate, stand-alone

Core Characteristics of RtI Standards-aligned instruction Universal screening Shared ownership Data-based decision making Progress monitoring Benchmark and outcome assessment Tiered Intervention & Service Delivery System Research-based interventions Flexible Grouping Fidelity of Implementation Parental Engagement

Strategic Interventions for Students at Risk of Academic Failure TIER 3: INTERVEN- TIONS FOR A FEW STUDENTS … TIER 1: FOUNDATION STANDARDS-ALIGNED INSTRUCTION FOR ALL STUDENTS TIER 2: INTERVENTIONS FOR SOME STUDENTS

TIER 1: FOUNDATION- STANDARDS-ALIGNED INSTRUCTION FOR ALL STUDENTS Effective instruction to engage and challenge students Clear & high expectations for learning and behavior Effective support to enhance engagement and promote school completion Periodic progress monitoring benchmark assessments

Look at the pyramid- Read the definition- Think about- Who is primarily responsible for decision making about what happens at Tier 1? What data do we use to make decisions in tier 1?

Tier 2: Strategic Interventions for Some Students Standards-aligned instruction with supplemental, small group instruction which may include specialized materials Use of standard protocol interventions scientifically research-based and high probability of producing change for large numbers of students scientifically research-based and high probability of producing change for large numbers of students designed to be used in a standard manner across students and typically delivered in small groups. designed to be used in a standard manner across students and typically delivered in small groups. Scientifically research-backed interventions (academic and/or behavior) Specialists assist with instruction in general education classroom and small group as needed

Look at the pyramid- Read the definition for tier 2- Think about- What makes this tier different from tier 1?? What already happens in your building similar to tier 2 described here, what needs to be “tweaked” to fit this description? What resources (people, space, time, materials) need to be re-allocated?

Tier 3: More Intensive Interventions for a Few Students Use of standard protocol interventions Use of standard protocol interventions May use supplemental instructional materials for specific skill development May use supplemental instructional materials for specific skill development Small, intensive flexible groups Small, intensive flexible groups Additional tutoring provided by specialists as part of the school day Additional tutoring provided by specialists as part of the school day Generally week interventions with weekly progress monitoring Generally week interventions with weekly progress monitoring Instructional changes based on data based decision making Instructional changes based on data based decision making

Look at the pyramid- Read the definition for Tier 3- Think about- What makes this tier different from tier 2? How might this impact your current responsibilities?
