Wolverine Justin Walker Ms. Confer Biology

Wolverine Looking like a small bear, the Wolverine is a fierce species of the Weasel family and the largest species in the Weasel family.

Information When a Wolverine is fully grown it is about 3 to 4 feet long. A Wolverine usually weighs about 30 to 40 pounds but could weigh 70 pounds. A Wolverine is usually brown but the color may vary depending on the environment. A Wolverine has two pale strips down its’ back.

Fact A new born Wolverine is called a kitten. The Wolverine has the muscle to defend its food from wolf packs, cougars, and grizzly bears. The Wolverine can climb trees and swim very well. The Wolverine is also known to run great distances without a rest.

Wolverine in the snow The Wolverine is using its great sense of smell to hunt its prey.

Information Wolverines only breed once a year. The Wolverine lives in the Artic mainland of Russia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The Wolverine will eat whatever it needs to eat but it usually eats carrion (dead animals). The Wolverine is so vicious that even bears flee when they hear the snarl of a Wolverine.

Fact The Wolverine is only ever at two speeds, fast and stopped. The Wolverine runs at full speed to catch its prey and stay on top of the snow. The Wolverine has large feet that act as snow shoes so it can run on snow. The Wolverine will ambush an animal or find a slower one.

Fact A Wolverine will spray its’ food with musk, burry the carrion (dead animal), and eat it later if it doesn’t eat it earlier. Musk is an unpleasant smelling fluid that it can spray using its’ anal glands. The Wolverine has bad eye sight but uses its’ great sense of smell to hunt at night. The name Wolverine means glutton.

Fact Musk smells almost as bad as the spray of a skunk. The Wolverine will use musk to mark its’ territory. The Wolverines’ territory is always large but sometimes as large as 200 sq. miles. The skunk is the Wolverines’ cousin and they are both part of the Weasel family.

Resting Wolverine This Wolverine is in one of its two movements, stopped.

Fact Wolverines are the largest species of the Weasel family. Despite its’ name the Wolverine is not related to the wolf in any way and the Wolverine is clever like a wolf but not as resourceful as a wolf. Wolverines’ are very shy and like most Weasels they are scarcely seen.

Information Wolverines have a truly balanced diet, they eat what is most resourceful. Wolverines will eat the most common food during each season. Wolverines will eat insects, bird eggs, fruits, nuts and berries in season, and carrion. Wolverines can kill anything as big as a moose or a deer.

Fact The Wolverine is so vicious that the Native Americans called it “the evil one”. The Wolverine is one of the worlds fiercest animals on Earth. The Wolverine has bone crushing teeth and sharp claws to attack animals as big as moose, more than ten times its size.

Information The Wolverine has deadly teeth, the long, sharp canines in front rip open the victim and the interior teeth chomp down and shatter the bone making it a brutal kill or a very slow death and if it gets away the Wolverine has a great sense of smell and can track down the injured animal or listen for the cry of the animal because they have great hearing as well.

Wolverine caught Very little is known about the Wolverine in East Idaho because they are the most secretive animal in Idaho.

Information People barely ever see Wolverines because they don’t live near humans, Wolverines will live about 200 sq. miles or more away from humans. Males live farther away then females do, male live about 100 sq. miles farther than the females do. The Wolverines prefer the silence and undisturbance from mankind. As temperatures rise on Earth from global warming the population has decreased.

Fact The Wolverine needs a lot of space to roam. They have been known to journey 24 kilometers, or 15 miles, a day looking for food. Some animals have been tracked over the snow for kilometers. Similar to other weasels, the Wolverine by nature is curious, daring, and tough.

Fact They are thought to be polygamous and hence share their territory with a number of females. The Wolverine has been known to journey up to 15 miles a day in search of food. Wolverines have chased animals for kilometers (about miles). Female Wolverines usually give birth to 2-3 kittens at a time, once a year.

That’s what I look like if you try to take a bite of my tacos! The Wolverine population is decreasing as the temperature on Earth is rising because of global warming.
