Universal Screening Rosemary Santos John Staumont Lydia Narcisse Sylvia Cadena

Assessment Assessment is considered the foundation of the learning process and is key to guiding meaningful instruction. Universal Screening is the first step to identifying at-risk students through assessment.

Definitions

Universal Screening Assessments that are quick, easy to administer, align to the curriculum, measure basic academic skills and are tied to state academic standards Typically they are administered K-12; three times a year.

Curriculum Based Assessment Direct, repeated assessments, administered frequently in order to make decisions about student learning.

Progress Monitoring A practice used to assess students’ academic performance, continuously measure student performance growth, and provide objective data to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction AND interventions.

Recommendations DRA Read Naturally Dora: Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment

DRA: Developmental Reading Assessment Description –DRA consists of a child reading an unseen text on his/her independent reading level. Running records are similar to DRA and are given on a formative basis to inform instruction. –The DRA and running record assess for: Oral reading: Ability to call the words on the page Fluency: Speed & expression or intonation Retelling/comprehension: Ability to share or retell the story to a friend who has never seen/heard/read the text).

DRA: Developmental Reading Assessment Rationale –Currently being used in Rowland Unified. –Running record allows for analyzing student reading behaviors quickly and on a one on one basis. –Helps support guided reading instruction and leveling. –Allows for documenting change over time.

Read Naturally Description –Fluency program designed to develop in readers the skills necessary for fluent and effortless reading: Speed, accuracy, and proper expression –Strategies Read along with a fluent model Repeated reading and student level. Progress Monitoring –Universal Screening One minute “cold timing” ranging from grades K-12.

Rationale –Software Edition –One minute cold timing assesses fluency and high frequency words. –Progress monitoring component. Creates detailed reports that track student progress and indicates areas the require additional intervention. Goal setting capabilities. –Student and teacher friendly. Read Naturally

DORA: Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment Description –Individualized assessment data across eight reading measures to profile each student’s reading abilities and prescribe individual learning paths. –Comprehensive student profiles result from assessing key reading sub-skills together: high-frequency words word recognition phonics oral vocabulary spelling reading comprehension fluency (English program only) phonemic awareness

Rationale –Assess the “Five Big Ideas in Reading Phonemic Awareness Alphabetic Principles Fluency Vocabulary Comprehension –Entire class may be tested at once. –Progress Monitoring Accurate student data is saved and reports are automatically updated: Student profiles—drive differentiated instruction and grouping Summary reports—fast visual views of students' diagnosis results for communicating with parents and others State standards reports—compare students' performances with state-specific reading and language arts standards DORA: Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment

Considerations for Pilot Accountability through data. –No hunches. Test group and control group data.

Burning Questions When looking at Universal Screening tools (assessments), are these the measures we "monitor" in progress monitoring? A question a teacher might have is: –How much data/evidence must I collect? –Do they only collect universal screening results? We need to think about what evidence students need to have to show progress (or lack of progress) as they receive instruction and/or interventions. –Will it be a list they can pull from? –Are there non-negotiable assessments? How will they be recorded? How often?
