COLLECTING Software

Why use Software with Hardware? Software used for collecting includes the software that interfaces with hardware collection device. This software is usually classified as part of the (OS) operating system. Some common types of (OS):  Mac  Windows  Linux  Unix

What is an Operating Systems? The operating system is the software that supervises and controls the hardware It is responsible for controlling all the peripheral devices (input and output devices) The operating system provides a convenient interface between the hardware its user MS-DOS is an operating system developed by Microsoft in 1981 for IBM’s 16-bit personal computers. The OS was called (CUI) character user interface, also known as command-line interface

What is an Operating Systems? CONT... A graphic user interface (GUI), allows the user to give instructions using a mouse, by clicking on icons and menus. GUIs are also referred to as (WIMP) environments windows, icons, a mouse and pull-down menus. GUIs provide an easy-to-use and consistent interface for a range of applications Microsoft Windows and Apple’s Macintosh OS are two popular GUI operating systems

Data Entry The collection of data involves entering images, audio, video, numbers and text. Types of data entry:  Images  Video and Audio  Text and Numbers

Internet As a Collection Source The internet is a source of data. It allows someone at one computer to collect data stored on another. Web sites are a source of collection data on the internet. It allows a user to collect information electronically via the internet. The internet also allows data to e downloaded. It is possible to download files containing text, graphics, animation, video, sound and software.

Non-Computer Tools Information technology is not always a suitable tool for collecting data. A wide range of non-computer tools are also used in many situations.  Literature – (printed text) has been the main medium for spreading knowledge since the beginning of the seventeenth century  Survey & Interviews – involve collecting sample characteristics, attitudes, behaviours, and opinions.  Collecting Data – Data can be collected manually by recording an event on a paper or a predesigned table or form.
