CCHALWRKSingleCouncilStructure Directional Leadership Governance & Structure

Core Purpose  Our core purpose today is to understand how an Accountable Leadership approach to church governance will facilitate the implementation and accomplishment of the church’s Mission and Vision.

Objectives: 1. Understand the paradigm or cultural shift necessary to fulfill the Mission and Vision. 2. Determine how the governance or directional leadership single board structure supports the Mission and Vision. 3. Learn the importance of responsibility, authority, and accountability in the single board structure. 4. Determine where existing committees, teams and individuals fit in the single board structure.

 Structural changes alone will not automatically result in fulfilling the church’s mission and vision.

First Priority: Remaining sold out to your Mission Vision and Values you hold.

 The adage, “if you aim at nothing you will hit it every time” is still true.  We have to understand to whom Jesus desires for us to reach.  Who are the beneficiaries of the church? Culture Shift

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20) Based upon Jesus. admonition to his disciples, who are the beneficiaries of the church?

Culture Shift  First Beneficiaries: Those outside the church.  Second Beneficiaries: Those inside the church.  It is not an either/or, but a both/and as to be a disciple of Jesus Christ we are to be about making more disciples.

 To fulfill God’s intended purpose for a church everything must be in alignment with the mission and vision.

 All ministries are audited at least yearly to ensure it fulfills the mission and vision.  If the ministry does not,it is given a year to align itself with the mission and vision.  After 1 year, if the ministry is still misaligned, it is discontinued.  This is called accountability.

 The structure, like a skeleton, supports the mission and vision of the church.

All games have rules or boundaries

 As in the game of Basket ball, the Ad Council determines what should not be done by setting boundaries.  The rules of a game do not tell you what you can do, the rules tell you what you can’t do.  Rules give you freedom – Adam & Eve were told what not to eat not what to eat.  Like the basketball player, those leading ministries are given the freedom to operate within boundaries or guidelines.

Setting the Boundaries  Examples of boundaries:  A budget – stay within your budget and you are okay  Spending policies  A building use policy  An employee manual

What does Ephesians 4:12-13 say about the Body of Christ ? 11 It was he (Jesus) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13

2 nd Beneficiaries of the Church 11 It was he (Jesus) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-12

a  Plateaued and declining churches routinely restrict their top leaders to a system of specific approvals.  The better way is to use boundaries as a tool to preauthorize any and all means that are ethical and prudent.  Example:  A governing council can create and enforece guiding principles

All for the purpose to succeed at the mission: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

o Keeping the rules is not the objective Jesus’ church is trying to accomplish. The objective is to fulfill the mission to make disciples. o Contextually, for every church it is the accomplishment of the God given vision to fulfill the mission.

o The Council has neither the time nor the expertise to list every thing that can be done. o Jesus commissioned the Church to make disciples of all nations, not to make decisions of all notions.

Example  What happens in your church today if the children’s director desires to redecorate the pre-school room?  What happens if the Council sets boundaries?

o The Church Council establishes the boundaries within which the Sr. Pastor, staff and ministries may operate. o Boundaries are prohibitions within which the Staff and ministries operate. o Boundaries do not tell you what you can do, they tell you what you can’t do. o A budget sets a boundary – stay within your budget and you are okay o A building use policy sets boundaries o An employee manual sets boundaries

o The Council/Board has neither the time nor the expertise to list every thing that can be done. o The Council/Board determines what should not be done.

Single Board Structure – Governance Governance is: EMPOWERMENT Those who are responsible and accountable are given the authority to equip, lead and make decisions within their ministry area.

Single Board Structure – Governance Governance is: 1.Visioning 2.Support 3.Budget/Financial Oversight 4.Policy - (building, SPRC personnel handbook, safe sanctuaries, etc.) 5.Establish and insure implementation of the system for accountability to mission, vision, goals 6.Establish the system for accountability to operational boundaries for pastors and paid and volunteer staff

Core Values are not a list of what you believe should be true, a shopping list of “buzz words on display in the lobby. Integrity, Joyful, Positive, Hopeful etc. Determine Your Core Values

Beware of Accidental Values

Core Values Are two or three priorities already evident in your church. Should take no more than minutes for a leadership team to determine. Determine the focus of the allocation of resources People, Money and Space Determine Your Core Values
