1 Subprojects of IFERC K.Lackner (as Chair of IFERC Project Committee) Garching – 14 Apr 2011

(1) DEMO Design and R&D Coordination Center DEMO Design Coordination: establishing a common basis for a DEMO design,  i) holding of seminars and other meetings,  ii) provision and exchange of scientific and technical information  iii) DEMO conceptual design activities DEMO R&D Coordination: 5 R&D areas  T1: SiC f /SiC Composites  T2: Tritium Technology  T3: Materials Engineering for DEMO Blanket  T4: Advanced Neutron Multiplier for DEMO Blanket  T5: Advanced Tritium Breeders for DEMO Blanket

(2) Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) provide and exploit a supercomputer for large scale simulation activities  to analyse experimental data on fusion plasmas,  prepare scenarios for ITER operation,  predict the performance of the ITER facilities  contribute to the DEMO design physics basis, and BA activities.

(3) ITER Remote Experimentation Centre (REC) to facilitate a broad participation of scientists in ITER experiments REC will be developed as a remote experimentation room for experimental campaigns to enable  preparation and data analysis for ITER,  to monitor the ITER plant status,  to prepare and transfer pulse parameter files to the ITER CODAC  presenting the main machine and plasma parameters in real time,  to access promptly the experimental data for further analysis at the REC. Prior to the demonstration of the ITER remote experimentation, the REC will be tested on the Satellite Tokamak at the end of its upgrade.

Computational Simulation Centre (CSC): benchmark exercises: target 10 x HPC-FF; issues: network-connection (initial 3Gbs commercial, shared, from Oct.2012dedicated to SINET4 distribution of resources: by a standing committee (system similar to HPC- governing board) initiate operations with „lighthouse projects“ no „EU/JA-quota“ except 10% for fortifying codes („greenhouse?.projects) high level support: up to EU and JA

DEMO Design Coordination by Integrated Project Team: union of DDA Unit of the IFERC Project Team, EU-Home Team JA-Home Team. Phase 2-A, Jan – Dec. 2012: Consolidation of knowledge, to define a soundcommon basis for DEMO design, definition of priorities for R&D tasks a.Definition of design criteria and cost models b. Analysis of key design issues and options and launch preliminary work c. Preparation and start implementation of system design code;

DEMO Design Coordination Phase 2-B, Jan – Dec. 2014: Detailed studies d. Follow-up work on key design issues and options and narrow down design options on which concentrate further analysis work e. Adjustment of Design Criteria, Design Equations, and cost models f. Evaluation of sets of DEMO parameters as a function of uncertainties g. Preparation of intermediate documentation. Phase 2-C, Jan – Jun. 2017: Development of pre-conceptual design options for DEMO h. Develop integrated conceptual design/ work final review i. Preparation of final documentation.
