Managing Our Media Habits A J1 Fellowship

Materials 2 white carnations 2 clear glasses Food dye

Lesson Place one carnation in one glass and another carnation in the other glass. In one glass place food dye. Leave it for 15 minutes to continue with a habits discussion. Go back to observing the carnations. Proceed with Discussion questions and Life Application questions and Testimony.

Bible Insights Matthew 6:22-23, Matthew 15:17-20, 1 Corinthians 10:23, Romans 7:15-16.

Habits Discussion Make a chart of time spent in certain things: TV, Computer, Video Games, etc. Potential questions to understand students’ habits: –What are the first couple of things you do when you get home after school? –What are your favorite TV shows? Why? –How often do you use the computer? –How long do you spend on the internet? Chatting online?

Discussion What happened to the carnation? What about the other carnation? How long did it take? Why did it happen? What do you think the white represents and the food dye represents in our spiritual lives? Imagine you are the flower, how long do you it will take for you to notice your change? What do you think you would do to stop further discoloring? How do you think this relates to managing our media habits? (lead-in to life applications)

Life Application Questions Were there Bible characters that struggled with their choices? What are some influences in yourself you’ve noticed?-- from some of the things you’ve watched, listened to, played, or spent too much time in? What are some methods to be conscience of how our habits influence us—especially in the moment so we can steer clear? Why is it important to strive for purity? Choose one area you think you need to manage better. What are specific things you can do you help yourself non lose self-control?
