Ch Economic Concerns in the 90’s  Computers- changing the way we live our lives today  Internet- you can do virtually everything on a computer now  Social Security- baby boomers are starting to retire so the $$$ will soon run out  Many are calling for SS reform

 The national debt becomes an issue  Politicians called for a balanced budget amendment but failed  Campaign Finance Reform- Cong. trying to regulate the financing of political campaigns.  1994-Republicans “Contract With America” won Congress

Stock Market  Bull Market- soar in trading and the Dow Jones over 10,000  Stock market booms in the late 1990s  Govt. experienced surplus funds in the late 1990s

North American Free Trade Agreement  NAFTA- goal was to reduce trade barriers between the U.S./Canada/Mexico  Tariffs were eliminated  Many companies relocated factories to Mexico b/c of lower wages  People criticize NAFTA b/c of a loss of American manufacturing jobs

Impeachment and Acquittal  Clinton accused of sexual harassing Paula Jones while governor of Arkansas  While testifying in the Jones case it was rumored that he had sexual relations with an intern while president  He denied the intern (Monica Lewinsky) allegations while under oath

Jones, Tripp & Lewinsky

Impeachment  Cong. accused him of perjury (denying the intern in court) & Obstruction of Justice (trying to influence others and conceal his relationship with the intern)  Congress controlled by Republicans and the impeachment proceedings were politically motivated.

 House voted to impeach the president  Senate- failed to convict the president of any wrong doing  Pres. Andrew Johnson and Clinton only presidents to be impeached but not convicted.

Clinton and the 90’s Legacy  1990s saw huge gains in technology  Clinton is viewed as a good president b/c of a great economy in the late 90’s  Impeachment proceedings tarnished his presidency  Rise in technology has led to a loss of privacy
