2. A. President Bill Clinton
Election of 1992: The Republican Party splits – some vote for President H.W. Bush, other for Ross Perot.
Result: Democrat Bill Clinton is elected.

3. A. President Bill Clinton
Considered a “New Democrat”
Still supported social programs, but also wanted to reform them.
Wanted to fix the economy by balancing the budget.
Impact: very different from Democrats before, who were known for raising taxes.
This new approach made him very popular.

4. B. Contract with America
1994 – Republicans win control of Congress.
Contract with America:
Led by Newt Gingrich.
Changes that were promised:
Welfare reform
Balanced budget/cut federal spending.
Result: Passed welfare reform, but President Clinton vetoed most of their policies.

5. C. Clinton Scandal
Evidence was leaked that President Clinton had a sexual relationship with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.
President Clinton denied it while under oath, but more evidence suggested that he did.
The House of Representatives impeached Clinton.
2nd President to be impeached.

6. C. Clinton Scandal
Impact: wasn’t removed from office by the Senate, but it damaged his popularity.
All of the Senate trials were on TV, so everyone found out about the details of his personal life.
However, Clinton still left office a very popular president because of the good he did with balancing the budget and foreign policy.

7. D. Election of 2000 Candidates: Result: VERY close election
Republican: George W. Bush
Democrat: Al Gore
Result: VERY close election
48.4% Gore, 47.9% Bush
Florida’s votes had to be recounted because it was so close.

8. D. Election of 2000
Bush narrowly won Florida, which meant he won the presidency.
Controversy: some ballots seemed to have been counted wrong/confused voters.
Bush v. Gore (2000) – U.S. Supreme Court said Florida couldn’t recount the faulty ballots, and Bush officially won the election.
