 On June 13, 1831, James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. With the exception of an older sister that died at a young age, he was an only child.  His father, John, was a lawyer who was in his forties by the time James was born.  James was raised by his father and his aunt after his mother’s passing.

 James Clerk Maxwell was one of the world’s greatest physicists… his equations paved the way to a much deeper understanding of optics, the science of light.

 They extend over a wide variety of fields, including optics, color vision, elasticity, and the behavior of the dynamical top.  Maxwell was also the first person to apply the methods of probability to the analysis of the properties of gases.  Maxwell founded and built the Cavendish Laboratory of experimental physics at Cambridge University, which was to be arguably the most prolific physics department for at least the next fifty years.
