Chapter 11 Site Orientation

Links for Chapter 11 Terrain Orientation View Orientation Solar Orientation Wind Orientation Sound Orientation

Terrain Orientation The characteristic of the land on which the structure will be placed Sloped sites are a natural location for multilevel or daylight basement homes Berm may need to be added to level the site

Terrain Orientation

View Orientation Provide an environment that makes the participant part of the view Orientation of the home is usually dictated by the view that will be seen by the client If the view and other orientations conflict, additional measures may be taken to ensure the view

Solar Orientation A southern exposure allows the maximum solar exposure It is important to remember that magnetic north may be off of true north Make sure trees do not block the southern orientation

Wind Orientation Prevailing winds is the direction the wind blows most frequently Most winds in the United States are from west to east Locate the home so winter winds are at a minimum

Wind Orientation Coniferous trees provide an excellent windbreak Natural ventilation during the summer will help to cool the house Deciduous trees provide cool shading during the summer

Sound Orientation Buildings below or level with the noise will be slightly quieter Evergreen hedges and bushes dampen the sound from a road or rail Fences or other buildings reduce noise, but can be visually distracting and expensive
