Long Furlong Primary School Nursery Provision

Background – current situation 52 part time places currently available 26 am and 26 pm Staffing: 1 qualified teacher and 1 Early Years Support Assistant (L4) Nursery numbers determined by LA in 1993, reflecting perceived needs in the area at that time Actual take up of places: Sep 2014: 24 (25) Jan 2015: 34 (33) Apr (est.) 38 (39) Approximately 2/3 in catchment and 1/3 out of catchment () comparative figures for

Financial implications of being undersubscribed EYFS funding calculations – funding for places available/funding for places taken up 96% of nursery funding spent on staffing compared with about 75% in the rest of the school 2015/16 school budget shows deficit carry forward (approx. £30k). Substantial saving required.

Proposed changes Cut the number of places from 52 to 26. Run 1 (potentially full!) session rather than 2 part full sessions. Staffing – 1 qualified teacher, 1 Early Years Support Assistant (Level 4) and a teaching assistant.

Potential gains Financial savings in the region of £20,000 per year Improved staffing ratios as a result of the third member of staff Greater proportion of children in nursery likely to go on to the main school

Potential losses Fewer places available resulting in the nursery admission criteria being used to allocate places Potential drop in out of catchment applications Possible that children who might currently attend nursery for 5 terms may only be able to attend for 3 terms.
