“Short ride on a fast machine” What machine is it? And WHY? ? Why?

“Short ride on a fast machine” Which instrument plays the driving pulse at the start ?

TEMPO = THE SPEED DYNAMICS = HOW LOUD OR QUIET TIMBRE = THE SOUNDS OF THE INSTRUEMNTS AND HOW THEY ARE BEING PLAYED TEXTURE = HOW MANY INSTRUMENTS PLAY AT ONCE IS IT BUSY / COMPLICATED / SIMPLE ? “Short ride on a fast machine” WHY? Is it the TEMPO? Is it the TEXTURE Is it the DYNAMIC? Is it the TIMBRE?

Debussy French Ludwig Van Beethoven German John Adams American When and where do you think this was written? In the last 30 years? 100 years ago ? In the last 200 years?

.. Which picture best describes the music? WHY?

.. The music has a driving repetitive pulse, but there are many layers of sound, a thick texture with lots of instruments playing complicated parts weaving in and out, (almost like the scenery flashing past), But there are also instruments stabbing out rhythms alongside the pulse, like a train on tracks, or the repetition of an engine. First slide, there is no right or wrong answer as long as the child can describe why he she thinks that…. Second slide – the wood block holds a steady pulse almost to the end. Words to help children justify the answer to the first slide John Adams
