COLLABORATION BETWEEN HIGHER EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY AT ISIB Isabelle Gerardy, Caroline Licour, Jonathan Baré, Agnès Peeters, François Tondeur ISIB, Haute Ecole Spaak, Bruxelles, Belgium

Introduction Collaboration with industry important for: ◦ Maintains the adequacy with professional’s needs Organized in ISIB by 3 ways ◦ Internship for students ◦ Applied research projects ◦ Development of specific learning modules for professionals in radiation protection

Internship for student Internship of 6 weeks for bachelor and one semester for master Database for placement: contains companies in different fields: ◦ Medical (manufacturer, hospital, …) ◦ Radiation protection, radioecology ◦ Research center ◦ Engineering development office… Master thesis ◦ developed within industry ◦ Subject linked to a real engineering problem ◦ Also accessible to Erasmus students

Interest for CHERNE partners Industrial master thesis for Erasmus students ◦ Direct way: Erasmus internship  ISIB just acts as a link between the company and the Cherne partner ◦ Indirect way: the student works at ISIB on a real industrial problem in close connection with the company  ISIB deals with the industrial partner

Two real cases Two students of Unibo (Bologna) coming for the master thesis Elisa Ceccolini (2008) ◦ Subject: Measurement of dose around a HDR brachytherapy system with gafchromic EBT film ◦ In collaboration with the St Jean hospital Silvia Tolo (2012) ◦ Subject: MCNPX modelling of the WENDI 2 neutron detector ◦ In collaboration with IBA sa

Applied research projects Collaboration with a company in the framework of FIRST projects Innovative applied research 2 or 4 years projects The grant of the Walloon region mainly covers the salary of the researcher Benefit for the company: ◦ a person working exclusively on a defined project ◦ Possible commercial valorisation of the results Benefit for ISIB: ◦ Increase of the knowledge in certain fields ◦ Limited possibility of new equipment

Inclusion of CHERNE in applied research projects Formation of the research fellow: ◦ DONDES (Fast neutron spectrometry): at UPV and CVUT ◦ MICOS (X-ray spectrometer) at UPV Erasmus projects: ◦ Silvia Tolo Related to the FREDONE project  Modelling of the neutron detector WENDI 2 ◦ Shanna Eismar from FHAachen (2012)  Feasibility study of XRF in vivo measurement of iodine within the thyroïd gland  The results obtained lead to the submission of a First project, elected by the Walloon authorities

Beyond Erasmus exchange Giorgia Cinelli ◦ Student in Bologna ◦ Master thesis in ISIB, related to a research on radon risk mapping  Collaboration with the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control ◦ PhD on natural radioactivity  5 publications with ISIB on Radon

Training of radiation protection experts 120h program developed to fulfil the requirements of the FANC In collaboration with IRE (for the French speaking part) U Hasselt (XIOS) and SCK: same program in Dutch Continuous contacts and exchanges with the companies involved in the nuclear and radiological field

And for the future Erasmus exchange principles will be drastically changed for the next year Erasmus for all ◦ creation of strategic partnerships  Focused on sectoral and cross-sectoral cooperation ◦ Between different types of actors linked to the educational field ◦ Wide range of different educational activities  Including social commitment, entrepreunarial spirit

Erasmus for all Different types of strategic partnerships Large opening to partnership with different types of actors: ◦ Industry: Electrabel- Tractebel, IRE, IBA sa, … ◦ Research: SCKCEN ◦ Radioprotection and controls: FANC, Controlatom, BelV… ◦ Hospitals: St Jean, Bordet…
