TextArc (from BBC News Dec. 29 th, 02) Textarc is an interactive programs-text analysis tool-, this software converts the text into an interactive map that allows viewers to quickly see relationships between words and characters at a glance, even without having read the book. This program is designed as a tool for academics or for people that need to filter a text quickly. E.g. lawyers could use the system to search long documents for specific words or characters. Design Thinking and Design Process A series of design process is considered as the relation of design problem – solution. The reason that there are various design process is because there are various approach methods to design problems. Design process is the repetitive process of finding new solution with feedback or evaluation activities of designers or with narrowing solution space changing design goals and adding new constraints-missing ingredients. Research in Design Thinking - edited by Nigel Cross, Kees Dorst, Norbert Roozenburg Background & Theory

Design Thinking and Design Process The author regard design process as “sequence of cognitive operations”; assimilation-analysis- synthesis-evaluation-communication. This design sequence is repeated with feedback loop to generate solution. In design process an understanding of user’s feeling is necessary to designers, and technologies can have some affect on design process. Design in Mind - Bryan Lawson Background & Theory

Interface Development - Design process : Design process is the repetitive process of finding new solution with feedback or evaluation activities of designers or with narrowing solution space changing design goals and adding new constraints-missing ingredients - Evaluation of Design process : Categorize to 2 elements i. satisfy architects (designers) in aesthetic aspects >> Visualize perspective images ii. consider user’s feelings >> Show and Analyze the line of flow, Evaluate design depending on several Users’ conditions >> My interface : find new solution with feedback or evaluation activities of designers : visualize space in perspective images to perceive the created spaces easily Background & Theory

Computer Application Stage 1 Draw plan in early design stage Stage 2 Show the path and relation of spaces Stage 3 Show the perspective view Find a improper relation of spaces and improper design depending on users’ conditions Stage 4 Change design (Generate new solution) Stage 5 Repeat design process

Stage 1 Stage 1 Draw plan in early design stage

Stage 2 Stage 2 Show the path and relation of spaces Imagine you are architect, and you design 5-story hospital. And you draw 1 st floor, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th floor plans. And you want to know the relation between Emergency room in 1 st floor and operating room in 3 rd floor. Click on Emergency room and operating room on your drawings. Computer show the path from emergency room to operating room on drawings and text. “Emergency room – corridor(1st floor) – elevator – corridor(3rd floor) – reception desk in small hall for going patient ward – operating room” ER Operating Room 1st 3rd TEXT DRAWINGS

ER Operating Room 1st 3rd Stage 3 Stage 3 Show the perspective view Find a improper relation of spaces and improper design depending on users’ conditions i.Perspective view Usually designers sketch several perspective images for seeing 3d spatial images If you want to see the space from emergency room to corridor, you click path on drawing. >> application show the perspective image for evaluate the created space for satisfying designers’ aesthetic taste click Show the perspective images

ii. Relation of spaces In the relation of spaces you figure out the unnatural path from text in Stage 2, designer can realize that you had better to change your design. Imagine you are emergent patient with traffic accident, so medical staff have to move you to operating room for surgery as soon as possible. But if for going to operating room, you have to pass crowded small hall, is it natural and efficient for medical care? Stage 3 * Relation of spaces – show the relation as text “Emergency room – corridor(1st floor) – elevator – corridor(3rd floor) – reception desk in small hall for going patient ward – operating room” ER Operating Room 1st 3rd Reception desk

iii. Users’ condition or feeling In this design, in my opinion one of important things is easy access for the handicapped person. For example I am handicapped with wheel chair, and I want to go from small hall in 1st floor to room for recovery exercise in 4th floor. Computer can show the path and access possibility like stage 2. - show path and evaluate case 1: small hall – stairs – corridor – room for recovery exercise Like case 1, I cannot go room for recovery exercise for class, because I cannot use stairs with wheelchair. case 2: small hall – elevator or ramp – corridor(4th floor) – room for recovery exercise Like case 2, I can access to room for recovery exercise, but we have to check other things for example the width of corridor and ramp, the size of elevator, the size of doors and so on. Because the person with wheel chair need more space to turn direction, go through corridor (going two way in corridor or ramp must be possible) than unhandicapped person. If application figure out that the access to room for recovery exercise in 4 th floor is impossible because of the narrow width of corridor in 4 th Floor, designer return stage 1 and change his 4 th floor design. The above-mentioned evaluation process is necessary, but if designer have to check this, in my opinion it is so time-consuming process. Stage 3

Stage 4 / 5 Stage 4 Change design (Generate new solution, Solve the founded design problems) Stage 5 Repeat these process- design, evaluation and generate new solution

Conclusion In design process, designers usually - draw a lot of drawings including perspective repeatedly - think about the line of flow and relations of spaces over and over. But in plan there are too many architectural symbols and information. So designers can miss something wrong in their designs. Therefore this interface help designers to visualize perspective images for satisfying designers’ tastes in the aesthetic aspects, to evaluate the relation of spaces, spaces depending on users’ conditions through showing the path and judging from plans’ elements.
