Where can I get all the documents????

GOOD NEWS!! NO CST= NO TEST FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES!! BAD NEWS!! SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT= SOCIAL SCIENCE TEACHERS ARE EXPECTED TO HELP BUILD ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS SKILLS ON THE ASSESSMENT!!

Key Shifts in English Language Arts Regular practice with complex texts and their academic language Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction

HOW CAN SOCIAL SCIENCES TEACHERS SUPPORT ELA SUCCESS ON THE SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT? 1)PROVIDE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO ANALYZE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS.

HOW CAN SOCIAL SCIENCES TEACHERS SUPPORT ELA SUCCESS ON THE SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT? 2) PROVIDE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO WRITE/ DISCUSS/ DEBATE PROMPTS THAT ARE BASED ON THE DOCUMENTS THEY ANALYZE.

HOW CAN SOCIAL SCIENCES TEACHERS SUPPORT ELA SUCCESS ON THE SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT? 3) PROVIDE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO DO CLOSE READING OF TEXT TO UNDERSTAND THE ARGUMENT/ CLAIM OF A DOCUMENT.CLOSE READING

HOW CAN SOCIAL SCIENCES TEACHERS SUPPORT ELA SUCCESS ON THE SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT? 4) GIVE STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK WITH EACH OTHER ABOUT TEXT: ARGUMENTS/ ACADEMIC LANGUAGE/ EXPLAINING MAIN IDEAS

EACH DOCUMENTS SET HAS 2 – 4 PRIMARY/SECONDARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS. EACH SET HAS QUESTIONS/CHART THAT ARE RELATED TO THE DOCUMENTS. I USUALLY HAVE STUDENTS COMPLETE THE QUESTIONS IN GROUPS OF 2 OR 3. I USE THE CENTRAL HISTORICAL QUESTION PROVIDED WITH THE DOCUMENTS AS THE WRITING PROMPT (FEEL FREE TO MODIFY THE QUESTION!)

I HAVE EACH STUDENT WRITE A “QUICKWRITE” RESPONSE WHICH SHOULD HAVE A CLEAR THESIS AND TWO FACTS FROM THE DOCUMENTS. THE RESPONSE SHOULD BE 2 OR 3 PARAGRAPHS LONG. MODEL THE WRITING PROCESS WITH YOUR CLASS FOR THE FIRST SET OF DOCUMENTS/WRITING PROMPT!! IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL PERIODS, BUT THE STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY NEED TO DO BETTER AND YOU WILL BE LESS FRUSTRATED!!

SHEG DOCUMENTS: OTHER WAYS TO ANALYZE BESIDES QUICKWRITES A) STRUCTURED ACADEMIC CONTROVERSY 1] STUDENTS ANALYZE DOCUMENTS IN GROUPS OF TWO OR THREE 2] STUDENTS FOLLOW S.A.C.GUIDELINES TO ANSWER A HISTORICAL QUESTION.S.A.C.GUIDELINES

SHEG DOCUMENTS: OTHER WAYS TO ANALYZE BESIDES QUICKWRITES B) DEBATE 1] STUDENTS ANALYZE DOCUMENTS IN GROUPS OF TWO OR THREE 2] TEACHER RANDOMLY SELECTS/PLACES STUDENTS IN TWO TEAMS BASED ON GRADES 3] TEACHER COLD CALLS STUDENTS TO RESPOND TO DEBATE Q; 2 POINTS/1 POINT/ZERO!!

SHEG DOCUMENTS: OTHER WAYS TO ANALYZE BESIDES QUICKWRITES C) STUDENT LED DISCUSSIONS 1] STUDENTS ANALYZE DOCUMENTS IN GROUPS OF TWO OR THREE 2] TEACHER SELECTS TWO STUDENTS TO CREATE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS BASED ON DOCS. 3] DISCUSSION LEADERS/TEACHER ALETRNATE STUDENTS TO RESPOND TO QUESTIONS

WHAT IF I WANT STUDENTS TO WRITE LONGER ESSAYS?? LAUSD MODEL LESSONS ARE WHAT I USE! LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE GREAT DEPRESSION!!

HOW CAN I SUPPORT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS WITH THE WRITING PROCESS?? SENTENCE STEMS, QUESTION FRAMES SENTENCE STEMSQUESTION FRAMES GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS (PG. 49) GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS OTHER SUGGESTIONS; GETTYSBURG ADDRESS OTHER SUGGESTIONSGETTYSBURG ADDRESS

ANY QUESTIONS/ CONCERNS/ ISSUES/ PROBLEMS/ DRAMA???
