 Challenge  How Does Evolution Happen? Useful Vocabulary:  Adaptation  Natural Selection  Variation  Evolution ACTIVITY 94: A MEETING OF THE MINDS Read Intro on Page F-24

 Evolution  A change in a species over time  Adaptation  any trait that makes you better suited to your environment  Natural Selection  Organisms with traits better suited to their environment survive and reproduce more than those with less desirable traits do. DEFINITIONS:

Analysis Question 1 1A) DRAW A VENN DIAGRAM 1B) WHY IS DARWIN’S THEORY MORE CONVINCING? LamarckDarwin

Analysis Question #2 AN ELEPHANT WITH A SHORT TRUNK COULD NOT REACH THE HIGHER LEAVES ON A TREE. SO ITS TRUNK STRETCHED AS IT TRIED TO REACH MORE LEAVES IN ORDER TO SURVIVE. WHEN THE ELEPHANT HAD BABIES, THE BABIES HAD SLIGHTLY LONGER TRUNKS BECAUSE OF THE STRETCHING. WHEN THEY GREW UP THEIR TRUNKS STRETCHED TO EVEN HIGHER LEAVES. THEIR CHILDREN HAD EVEN LONGER TRUNKS. THIS HAPPENED FOR MANY GENERATIONS, UNTIL THE ELEPHANT TRUNKS BECAME AS LONG AS THEY ARE TODAY.
