Presentation transcript:

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Lecture By Prof. Dr. Ansari (for BDS students) Tuesday am.

Objectives To know the gross anatomy of 1.internal organs, ovary, uterus, uterine tubes, and vagina. 2. external female genitalia. 3. Blood supply, and functions of each organ.

External genitalia

The top picture shows a side view of a woman's internal organs. These include the bladder, uterus, ovaries, vagina, and rectum. The cervix is located inside the vagina, and is the opening to the uterus. The bottom picture shows a woman's external anatomy. The vulva consists of the labia, which are the lips surrounding the vaginal opening. The large lips are the labia majora, and the smaller lips are known as the labia minora. The clitoris, the urethral opening (where urine comes out) and the anus are also seen.

Internal organs

The ovaries Two ovaries, the female gonads, produce mature eggs. Leading away from the ovaries are the fallopian tubes, or oviducts, the site of fertilization. The uterus, a muscular organ with an expandable neck called the cervix, houses the developing fetus, which leaves the woman's body through the vagina, or birth canal.

BLOOD SUPPLY Ovary is supplied by ovarian artery from abdominal aorta. Uterus is supplied by uterine artery from internal iliac artery. Vagina is supplied by vaginal artery branch from internal iliac artery.

Uterus and tubes It is a pear shaped organ, situated in the pelvic cavity. The walls of uterus is made up of peritoneum- perimetrium, muscles-myometrium & mucus membrane-endometrium. Uterus is the site for development of embryo. Uterine tubes are 10 cm in length, meant for ovum, sperms transfer & fertilization. Ectopic pregnancy may occur in tubes, which is fatal.
