SPSC116 Summary Lau Gatignon, 14 January 2015

Accelerators Ion preparations are well under way, including de-bunching and recapture. Ion interlock against accidental proton extraction into the North Area will be validated by a DSO test in week 7. AD had a difficult run but beam intensity and quality improved gradually to finally reach nominal values. Transverse trajectory fluctuations were successfully reduced during the run. Kicker electronics removal to B393 and CCC installation are on the critical path. Two main magnets to be refurbished. For ELENA a few issues will be brought up next meeting: stacking option, changes to transfer lines (AEGIS, BASE, ASACUSA).

Schedule Scrubbing runs may still be moved, hopefully not into the proton physics period. NA62 will start late because of the ventilation system upgrade. Late AD start-up because of ELENA preparation work. Still some uncertainties for AD user schedule. Draft schedules for the Argon and proton runs were presented. In EHN1 the H4 beam is heavily over-booked. Some users may be moved to the East Area. E.g. SHIP-GEM in T9 if a big enough magnet can be found (such as MNP17).

BASE BASE has been doing well and they are expecting significant results in Indeed progressive progress has been made. Well organised and excellent prospects. Based on ratio of Larmor and cyclotron frequency. They are sensitive to magnetic noise, not to electric noise. Therefore they install a better shielded magnet already now. There is good synergy between the proton runs in Mainz and the antiproton work at CERN. Do they have to pay again for beam components at ELENA?

BASE recommendations The committee congratulates BASE with the rapid progress of the experiment at CERN. The SPSC notes with pleasure the good prospects for a new measurement of the antiproton magnetic moment during 2015.

ASACUSA Two declared aims for 2014: 1) Preparations for Hbar spectroscopy 2) 2  pbar-He spectroscopy. Instead they started with 1  pbar-He spectroscopy, with nice results, improving the precision 1.3 to 5 times and now consistency with theory. The 2  spectroscopy is now planned for 2015 (30-35%), as well as Hbar spectroscopy 55-60%) and pbar annhilation. They also performed pbar annihilation experiments at 5.3 MeV, to be done before ELENA switches on.

ASACUSA Recommendations The Committee is pleased with the completion of the measurement of 1 photon transitions in anti-protonic He and for their inclusion in the CODATA14 value of antiproton mass. The Committee congratulates ASACUSA with the completion of the commissioning of the full apparatus for the HFS spectroscopy of ground-state anti-hydrogen and the detection of anti-Hydrogen in 2014 with the final apparatus. The Committee looks forward to the first attempts of anti- hydrogen spectroscopy, to the studies of 2-photon transitions in p-bar He and, to collision experiments at 5.3 MeV.

ATRAP Competes with BASE for magnetic moment measurements. Also measurements with anti-hydrogen. Both can be done simultaneously (the g measurement is quasi-parasitic). Major upgrade to 2 nd generation Ioffe trap. Now working…. Can be stopped in 15 ms instead of 100 s in the past! Lost quite some time due to BASE integration. Suffer from noisy environment at CERN and from beam quality issues in Concern about lack of air conditioning in laser cabin (but never requested) and poor assembly area (central ‘clean’ facility?).

ATRAP Recommendations The committee notes with pleasure the successful commissioning of the new Ioffe trap and the improved magnetic moment apparatus at CERN The committee looks forward to the first anti-hydrogen and magnetic moment results in 2015

ACE The benchmark experiment was performed successfully end of November. They got 30 h of stable beam (36 h expected), but it was sufficient. The results are expected very soon. They realised now that the divergence was different in the horizontal and vertical planes. They have to check if this was also the case in the past and, if so, correct the dose computation in the previous datasets. Final analysis results will be presented in the April SPSC meeting.

ALPHA ALPHA has now moved to ALPHA-2, optimised for spectroscopy rather than trapping. In spite of the short duration, the run was very successful: the cryostat, s.c. magnets, UV system and all traps were fully commissioned. Many improvements were made. The He consumption decreased from 16 to 10 dewars/ week. In 2015 they hope to further improve the Hbar trapping rate and to routinely induce spin flips and introduce Lyman- alpha light. Attempt laser cooling and spectroscopy with this light. Further investigations of gravitational behaviour of Hbar.

ALPHA Recommendations The SPSC committee congratulates the ALPHA Collaboration with the successful commissioning of the ALPHA-2 setup with improved performance and the first anti- hydrogen trapping. The SPSC looks forward to the demonstration of resonant laser excitations of trapped anti-hydrogen

AEGIS AEGIS requests now to move to the ELENA area by the end of 2016 (or as soon as ELENA is getting ready), to get more space. First investigation for April SPSC meeting? The 2014 goals were partly achieved. They produced P s. But not yet anti-hydrogen. They validated the Moiré deflectometer successfully with hydrogen. For 2015 they should be in a position to form a Hbar beam. Overall there is progress, but maybe not quite as fast as expected…

AEGIS Recommendations The SPSC committee acknowledges the progress made since the last annual review The SPSC looks forward to the first H-bar formation in 2015

GBAR Final installation foreseen for To cope with the 10x larger than expected longitudinal emittance, GBAR plans to include an ion trap in the pbar transport. The electron linac will be limited to 9 MeV for RP reasons. The gravitational fall detection will be based on Micromegas. Funding is mostly secured, but it is not clear whether the manpower is sufficient for all sub-projects. Tests and construction work will continue in Saclay throughout GBAR shall provide resource plans and a timeline with milestones.

GBAR Recommendations The SPSC appreciates the progress in the development of components of the GBAR apparatus and encourages the Collaboration to continue efforts to resolve the remaining issues. The SPSC is pleased with the recent agreement for the funding and construction of the positron linac. The SPSC is looking forward to receiving a resource plan and detailed schedule for the development and installation of the key components of the apparatus.

NEUTRINOS WA104 got the MoU signed by INFN and CERN for the ICARUS T600 refurbishment. The joint proposal by LAr1-ND, MicroBoone and ICARUS for FNAL will be discussed by the PAC on January 15 th. WA104 is part of ELBNF. The two T600 TPCs have been transported to CERN. The earlier plan to install ICARUS in the EHN1 extension seems to have been abandoned. WA105 provided detailed answers to questions by the referees (June). They would be able to cope with 100 Hz data rate. Detailed information becomes available for the 1x1x3 m 3 prototype. The 6x6x6 m3 cryostat will be dedicated to the 2-phase Lar LEM TPC test. ELBNF (chair S.Bertolucci) will be hosted by Fermilab: a 40 kton modular Lar TPC and a MW neutrino beam facility at FNAL with improved access foreseen in the Sanford Underground facility (South Dakota) at 1300 km. Already 10 kton in Expect 1.2 MW in 2024, 2.4 MW in LoI now, CDR by summer Full cost & schedule by end of 2017.

NEUTRINOS (2) More LOI are expected soon, e.g. Argon-Cube. More information should come soon for spectrometers and other detectors. Also on implementation details for the EHN1 extension. CERN is contributing to the Fermilab beam design. There will be some review of the neutrino platform at the next SPSC, in time before the next MTP discussions.

Other experiments UA9 For 2015 they will get 16 days of primary beam (before NA62 starts) and 1 week with pion beam in H8 and 3+1 runs of 24 hours in the SPS. A detailed program with priorities has been defined by the Collaboration. For the SPS tests the main priorities are tests of the piezo-electric goniometer, a test of the Cerenkov detector, studies of volume reflection and crystal length optimisation. AWAKE The order for the 10 m vapor cell design study has been placed. A lower power C-shaped magnet has been chosen for the e - spectrometer. Easier access for equipment installation and for the installation of the magnet itself.

Other experiments (2) CLOUD The CLOUD9 run was completed on 24 November. First results on the formation of ice clouds may be discussed at a workshop in February. The CLOUD10+11 runs are foreseen for fall 2015, as well as a run without beam in spring. A planning for the coming years exists. They are still investigating options for a permanent meeting room near T11. P349 P349 had a run in T11 on anti-proton polarisation in p+N interactions for possible application in the future antiproton facility FAIR at GSI. The run went well but the would profit from more statistics (about 2x more). The SPSC recommends a 2-week P349 run in 2015, the detailed schedule will be agreed with CLOUD early February. A report is requested for the April meeting.

Other experiments (3) COMPASS COMPASS had a commissioning run for the new Drell-Yan program with a significantly modified set-up in the target/absorber region. They had some delays due to LHE delivery, cold box problems and the commissioning of the polarised target magnet (PH/DT) as well as a transport accident of a new drift chamber DC5 (many wires broken). A first look at the data gives very reasonable (but very preliminary) results. Combinatorial backgrounds look ok, even at higher masses. A planning exists to fully commission the polarised target magnet in This is indeed very important for the SPSC committee.

Other experiments (4) NA62 NA62 has already shown first data from the 2014 run, from the straws, the LKR calorimeter and from the RICH. Mostly 5% of nominal intensity, but short periods at 20% and (few minutes at 40% of nominal). Beam composition as expected. They suffer from the 50 and 75 Hz structures in proton delivery. The vacuum system worked well. Reached mbar in spite of a small leak in a straw. The GTK was not yet complete (3 stations installed but only ~10% equipped) and MUV1 will only be delivered in February or March. More work is required in the trigger and DAQ domain. NA62 acknowledges the continuous technical and administrative support from CERN and the collaborating institutes. The SPSC congratulates NA62 on their progress and the successful initial data-taking period in 2014.

Other experiments (5) NA61 NA61 had a hadron beam run for the calibration of the PSD calorimeter and for p+Pb reference data. The PSD is important for the Argon run. They could collect 20 M events using the new Low Momentum Particle detector for event centrality determination. The preparations for the Argon beam period are progressing well. They would be interested in lower beam energies (9 GeV) but understand that this is very difficult. Higher secondary beam energies (up to 380 GeV) may be feasible. First data-taking for USNA61 is planned for this fall. The formal agreement has not yet been signed. The University of Hawaii has been granted limited membership for 2015, also to prepare a proposal for measurements for AMS.

Other experiments (6) NA63 NA63 will study nuclear size effects in the e/  emission process during the Argon run, They are on track for the run. Later in the year they will run on positron emission from electrons incident on crystals, useful for CLIC. They got 16 days at the start of the proton run for electron beams at 20 and 10 GeV/c. CAST CAST will have two data-taking periods in A budget for the cryogenics upgrade (250 kCHF) has been found, but there is no manpower available for The run for 2016 is not yet approved. Future plans must be announced soon.

Other experiments (7) OSQAR OSQAR looks for ‘light shining through the wall’ (axions) and for chameleons. They expect to publish the axion results in a few months from now. They are now discussing with ALPS (DESY). If convergence, a proposal will come, allowing a factor ~100 gain in sensitivity. This would need a 6m 2 ‘clean room’ in between the LHC dipoles in SM18. The SPSC is waiting for the proposal. In 2015 they plan a chameleon search by looking for an afterglow. The SPSC had asked for a (~10 page) proposal, but instead the referees received only partial answers to their questions. The referees do not have the impression that OSQAR had taken on board all the issues identified in the literature (see e.g. GammeV/CHASE). E.g. the proposed turbomolecular pump would possibly empty also the chameleons from the apparatus. Still the experiment has some interesting potential at modest cost for CERN. The SPSC defers the decision to SPSC117, based on more detailed input and with guidance from an external chameleon expert.
