SPSC123 Summary Lau Gatignon/EN-EA IEFC, 4 November 2016

Accelerator and EA reports
The SPSC supports the replacement of the TIDVG during the EYETS, as the intensity limitations will be problematic otherwise. The AEGIS ECR for a new zone is almost ready for submission. The cryogenic line for the AD experiments is still considered important for those experiments and installation during LS2 at the latest is strongly recommended by the committee. The SPSC notes the on-going effort of the review of the experimental magnets in the secondary beam areas and is looking forward to the measures taken to ensure stable future running of the experiments. A new MPS will be funded for the Morpurgo magnet. The SPSC encourages the Neutrino Platform teams to perform muon flux measurements in the pits asap. LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary

ALPHA-g PROPOSAL This is a full proposal for adding a vertical trap to ALPHA for gravitational measurements. This will be installed in the extension of the ALPHA zone and start operation in late In a first phase the sign of the gravitational force on anti-matter will be measured and at a later stage the strength to 1%. Alpha-g has been recommended for approval. The Helium consumption has to be checked, where in the worst case Alpha-2 and Alpha-g may not be able to run in parallel. LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary

ALPHA-g Use vertical trap to measure gravitational constant for anti-Hydrogen. Phase 1: measure sign Phase 2: measure the strength to 1% Slow Hbar release through the atom trap Could start running late 2017 Relies on the ALPHA zone extension (approved by IEFC) No significant request to CERN otherwise, apart from possibly the Helium consumption? If problem, can run in alternation with Alpha-2. LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary

Open presentations NA61 has very significant beam requests for 2017 and 2018, which will be in conflict with requests from other users. In particular they request 60d of Pb running in Their request for long periods of low energy may be incompatible with H4 operation. They repeat that more low-energy protons would be an advantage. For running beyond LS2 (open charm, multistrange baryons, etc) major upgrades will be required. The committee is worried about the FTPC delays. UA9 has essentially reached its main objective of demonstrating collimation. They had many good results in H8, but have difficulties with the CpMT Cerenkov counter. The committee wants more precise justification and details for their significant beam request. The committee recognizes the excellent progress of AWAKE, who are still on schedule, but the plasma wakefield acceleration physics has yet to start. It is therefore too early to make recommendations for the Run-II plans and resources. DIRAC will submit a LOI for an experiment at the SPS in April 2017. LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary

Expressions of Interest
EOI012 for the measurement of charged baryon magnetic moments at the SPS and LHC is rather vague and will initially be followed via PBC. EOI013 proposes to measure the spectrum of muons emerging from a SHiP replica target exposed to a 400 GeV beam in NA61. There is no agreement yet on details of financing and on the planning. The committee encourages SHiP to continue discussions, as the measurements of these spectra are important for the muon shield design. EOI014 (ENUBET) has received a 2 Meuro ERC grant to study a neutrino beam (slow extracted) with tagging of the kaon component via Ke3 decays. For the moment this is a study requiring some manpower and expertise from CERN for supervision of postdocs. The collaboration has to provide more details on their request. LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary

Ongoing experiments ATRAP suffered from air conditioning problems and they claim that one laser failure may have been caused by that. BASE is still running on 2015 antiprotons and would like a zone enlargement once ELENA is operational. Most AD experiments request power, cryogens and cooling during LS2 and SPSC supports this request. NA63 will request a 2-week run for radiation reaction measurements in 2017 – need proposal for January meeting. The SPSC recommends the COMPASS Drell-Yan run for 2018 and encourages COMPASS to upgrade the Cedars (mainly electronics and temperature stabilization). NA64 showed extremely encouraging results from their July run. LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary

Other experiments Many AD experiments (ALPHA, AEGIS, BASE) need LHE, power, cooling during LS2. Experiments activity in LS2: implications to be understood soon. BASE requests a small extension to their zone once ELENA is operational (space should be available) They are still running on 2015 antiprotons! COMPASS: the SPSC recommends a second Drell-Yan run in 2018 with an upgraded CEDAR (COMPASS electronics, temperature stability) LG, EATM, SPSC123 Summary
