Security and Shelter Security and shelter encompasses anything that provides children the feeling of being safe, both physically and mentally. One way to accomplish this is to add objects to your room that make it more homelike and comfortable. My examples are stuffed animals around the room and an alphabet carpet for whole class meetings.

Social Contact Social Contact deals with how your classroom arrangement allows for social interaction among students and with the teacher. The main way to control social contact is through seating arrangements. In my example, the teacher uses tables to encourage small group work and interaction.

Symbolic Indentification Symbolic Identification is how the classroom reflects the people in it, including the teacher and the students. One way to do this is by posting student artwork. In my example, the teacher posted student’s coloring page of an ox for the letter “O.”

Task Instrumentality Task Instrumentality is how the classroom aids in learning. This means having a designated space for group work, computer time, and even to store belongings. My example is of the cubby area, where students store belongings to allow more space at their tables.

Pleasure Pleasure deals with the visual appeal of the classroom to encourage students wanting to be there. This entails decorations, color, and variety that surround the classroom. My example is of the meeting area wall, where the teacher uses many colors and decoration to make the room feel a little more friendly.

Growth Growth deals with anything that promotes children’s development. My example is the “I Was Caught Being Good” bulletin board where children receive tickets for exhibiting the character skill of the month. This month’s character trait was cooperation.
