Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Defining Work Packages Work Package 7- Sustainability

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Work Package 7- Sustainability Any definition of sustainability runs the risk of being taking out of context. It becomes easy to find flaws when one definition is applied in another conceptual framework. Thus in defining sustainability, we must be clear what the objective of the definition is, and come to a conclusion of what it means to a particular concept.

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Our context Availability of mathematics literature Consistency over time Viability of electronic documents What else? Have we defined?

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 archiving considerations RLG/OCLC working group on digital preservation: defining a sustainable digital archive Task force on digital repository certification A metadata framework to support the preservation of digital objects

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Sustainability: Is the institution making a commitment to maintain the digital resources and continue making them available? [archiving] Does it have the financial stability to carry through on a commitment? [economics]

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Issues Time Cost Cost recovery Concept vs. context

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Time Short term mirror sites geographically scattered Long term archiving

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Cost/Cost Recovery Mathematicians, publishers have competing views Libraries understand both views Most material already referreed/vetted

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Contents vs. context What to archive What relationships to indicate Guides some metadata choices

Göttingen EMANI Meeting November 22-23, 2002 Dividing sustainability Systems –Archiving Project –Economic model Intersection of systems and project –Archiving costs
