Review of Genesis 46: God repeated the promise to Jacob that He made to Abraham, Gen. 46:1-3; 12:2. Jacob and all his family moved from Canaan to Egypt, Genesis 46:4-27. Jacob and his family were reunited with Joseph, and settled in the land of Goshen, the best of the land, Genesis 46:28-34.

Brief Outline of Genesis 47: Joseph presented five of his brothers and his father to Pharaoh, Genesis 47:1-12. Joseph dealt wisely with the Egyptians as the famine continued, Genesis 47: Joseph vowed to Jacob that he would bury him in the land of Canaan, Genesis 47:27-31.

Joseph Presented five of his Brothers and Father to Pharaoh Joseph told Pharaoh that his brothers and family, and flocks, were in Goshen, v. 1. Joseph took five of his brothers, and presented them to Pharaoh, 47:2. The conversation between Pharaoh and Joseph’s brothers, Genesis 47:3,4. The words of Pharaoh to Joseph, 47:5,6, reiterating the promise of Gen. 45:18-20.

Joseph Presented Five of His Brothers and Father to Pharaoh (continued) Joseph brought his Father to meet Pharaoh, and “Jacob blessed Pharaoh.” - Consider the contrast between the two! The Conversation between Pharaoh and Jacob, Genesis 47:8,9. - “How old are you,” v. 8? The Family was situated in the best of the land, and provided for by Joseph, v.9-12.

Joseph Dealt Wisely with the Egyptians as the Famine Continued. The money used to purchase grain was given to Pharaoh, Genesis 47:13,14. When the money was exhausted, the people brought their livestock in exchange for food, vs The next year, as the famine continued, the people exchanged their land for food, vs

Joseph Dealt Wisely with the Egyptians, continued. The Priests were an exception to the land exchange, v This is “the earliest account we have of an established religion supported by the state,” Adam Clarke. Joseph gave the people seed to sow the land, and the people were to give a fifth back to Pharaoh, v The people voiced gratitude to Joseph, v.25,26

Joseph Vowed to Jacob that He would bury Him in the land of Canaan, Israel dwelt in Egypt, in Goshen, and “multiplied exceedingly,” Gen. 47:27. Jacob lived in Egypt 17 years, reaching age 147; he knew death was approaching, Gen. 47:28,29. Jacob requested Joseph that he would swear to him that he would not bury him in Egypt, Genesis 47: “Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed,” Genesis 47:31.

Some Practical Appliations from this Chapter: Life on earth is short, Genesis 47:9. Life is a pilgrimage, Genesis 47:9. Hard times help us Establish Priorities. God’s people are a Blessing to others! God-fearing Children come to the aid fo their Needy and Aged Parent.

Conclusion: God-fearing people in Old Testament times desired a “heavenly country,” Hebrews 11:16. God-fearing people in New Testament times desire a “heavenly country!” Because of the grace of God and the gospel of Christ, precious souls can be saved!
