The price tag of failing to address unmet need for family planning:  53 million unwanted pregnancies  390,000 maternal deaths  1.6 million newborn deaths  14.5 million unsafe abortions

The deadlock: unmet need for family planning since 1995

Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health  Country-led health plans, supported by increased, predictable and sustainable investment  Integrated delivery of health services and life-saving interventions  Access prevention, treatment and care  Stronger health systems, with skilled health workers.  Innovative approaches to financing, product development and efficient health service delivery  Improved monitoring and evaluation to ensure the accountability of all actors for results.

Reducing unmet need by 100 million new users will mean:  56 million fewer unintended pregnancies  54 million fewer abortions  110,000 fewer mothers dying in pregnancy and childbirth  1.4 million fewer infant deaths  meeting the family planning needs of 80% of all women in low- and middle-income countries
