Maternal death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.

12 a well managed population for quality life Maternal Health and FP Every year over 6,000 women die due to pregnancy related complications (equivalent to over 10 KQ 787 Dreamliner planes crushing and killing everybody in one year; 1:22 vs. 1:8000 in the developed countries) Access to safe motherhood and voluntary FP services significantly reduces unintended pregnancies and abortions and saves women’s lives More than a quarter of women (15-49) have an unmet need for family planning

16 a well managed population for quality life Ripple Effects of Family Planning FP is key to healthy timing of pregnancy ensuring healthy mother and babies With increased birth intervals, risks of deaths and complications to both mothers and child are reduced Longer birth intervals support healthy nutrition for children and mothers HIV infected couples can plan for pregnancy when viral load is low

17 a well managed population for quality life Conclusion Preventing maternal and child deaths requires broad interventions hence;  Increased resources to health including for FP commodities to ensure access to services for the communities.  Increased human resource (especially nurses and midwives) to provide skilled services.  Investing in FP is cost effective in reducing deaths and complications  Investing in FP is critical in our County and national development towards vision 2030.
