February 1 st 2012 CNN Student News Discussion Question of the day- copy down in journal, answer, and discuss What is the purpose of Black History Month? What are some of the significant people, places, and events involving African-Americans that have had an impact on U.S. history? If you could interview a historic African-American, whom would you interview, and what questions would you ask?

#1 Answer: Arabian Peninsula: lies in Southwest Asia between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf Plateau of Iran: lies in central and eastern Iran and is surrounded by mountains Euphrates River: flows from a plateau on the Anatolian peninsula to the Persian Gulf Oasis: a fertile or green spot in the desert created by underground water coming to the surface

2. Find Main Ideas: Use your completed chart to answer the following question: What are some possible solutions to the problems caused by living in such an arid region?

Answer: Solutions: qanats, irrigation canals, dams, pipelines, tunnels, and huge projects to bring water to dry areas

3. How do the mountains of Southwest Asia affect its climate

Answer: They block moisture-bearing winds, making the region more arid.

4. How did people in ancient times move water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to their crops?

5. What might be done to limit earthquake damage?

6. Make Inferences: When two countries rely on the same river, what issues might arise?

#6 Answer: Possible answers- There could be conflict if the county that lies upstream pollutes the river. There could also be disputes about transportation rights. A country might fear that it wont receive enough water.

7. Compare and Contrast: How is a qanat different from a surface irrigation system?

# 7 Answer: A qanat uses an underground tunnel.

8. Connect to Today: What might be some problems with building dams in a region prone to earthquakes?

#8 Answer: Possible answer: an earthquake will break the dam and cause a destructive flood.
