 The actual author of the Gospel of John is unknown ◦ It is unsure whether John the Evangelist was a single person  One of the early Church Fathers confused the writer of the Gospel of John with the Apostle John  Scholars today note that it may have been written and edited in several stages by different people

 Represented by an eagle. This was chosen because of John’s lofty view of Jesus’ Divinity and his heavenly origin.

 The Apostle John may have inspired the Gospel of John  Some scholars have said that the Gospel was written in Antioch of Syria or Alexandria Egypt. ◦ This is important because the Gospel may have been written to address the concerns of a local church.

 May have been written for local churches in Antioch, Syria, or even Alexandria.  Often used the word “we”, referring to the disciples themselves. ◦ John was written as a firsthand account of Jesus’ life, teachings, and mission.

 Jesus uses discourse in order to convey a message in John’s Gospel along with attending Passover feasts with his apostles.  Jesus met the people where they lived.  Jesus loved the people that he met and taught them the same. “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.” John 15:12  Jesus preformed several miracles in John that were not mentioned in the other gospels.

 Jesus restores life to Lazarus after he had been dead for 4 days. This is unique to the gospel of John.  John 11: I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

 Other miracles like the turning of water to wine and Jesus healing a blind man from birth are only found in the gospel of John. John 2:9 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside John 9: After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

 Part 1 is the book of signs. ◦ In the book of signs, Jesus began his ministry and preformed seven signs, or miracles. Part 2 Is the book of Glory The book of Glory begins with the Last Supper, and ends with the Resurrection of Jesus. The Gospel of John ends with Jesus’ appearances in Galilee.

 Christology is the branch of theology that focuses on whom Jesus was and his meaning.  John stresses Jesus’ heavenly link to God. Jesus was God’s total self-communication. Jesus was God’s word. In John 1:1 it also says that Jesus was God.  Jesus is the eternal word of God

 Parables and exorcisms are found in the synoptic gospels, but they are not found in the gospel of John.  John is not considered a synoptic gospel  The synoptic gospels have similar events mentioned, whereas John is different.  John emphasizes Jesus’ divine origins and the synoptic emphasize his humanity  John does not directly mention Jesus’ baptism, and all the synoptic do.
