The Name “John”  No verse in this gospel records the name of the author  The twenty times “John” is used always refers to John the Baptist  The Gospel of John does not refer John as “the Baptist” but is in all three of the synoptic gospels  John, the author, refers to himself as:  “one which leaned on his breast at supper, whom Jesus loved” (13:23; 21:20)  “the disciple standing by, whom he loved (19:26) 4

About the apostle John… 5  The author is the apostle (John 21:20, 24)  From Galilee – probably Bethsaida (John 1:44), home of Peter and Andrew and maybe John and James – the four were partners (Luke 5:10)  John and James were brothers (Matt.4:21)  His father’s name was Zebedee (Matt.4:21); mother was Salome (Matt. 27:56; Mk. 15:40)  A commercial fisherman  His family had some material means – a boat, nets, house, servants, etc. (Mark 1:20)

The Apostle John Was Qualified to Write This Gospel 6  One of the first chosen by Jesus (Luke 5:10)  Jesus named him and his brother, “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17)  Jesus loved him and asked him from the cross to care for His mother (John 19:26,27)  Included in the inner circle of apostles (with Peter and James)  John and Peter are the two names most mentioned among the apostles  Was present at the raising of Jarius’ daughter (Mark 5:37)

(Matthew 17)  One of the witnesses of Jesus’ Transfiguration (Matthew 17) (John 13:23)  “Disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23) (Acts 8:14; Galatians 2:9)  Closely associated with Peter and his work (Acts 8:14; Galatians 2:9) (1:35)  He was a disciple of John the Baptist (1:35)  Then, this writer wrote, “This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.” (21:24)  John was an eyewitness to these things! 7 The Apostle John Was Qualified to Write This Gospel

Introduction to the Gospel of John  The Gospel of JOHN  A Gospel of Boldness (p.i)  “Boldness” is defined on page 3  The Asynoptic Gospel (p.1)  Not like Matthew, Mark and John in content, structure and language  About 90% is not found in the synoptic gospels  John knew what was contained in the synoptic gospels so he avoided duplication to a large extent 8

Material included in Synoptic Gospels but Omitted by John  John makes no mention of Jesus’ birth, baptism, temptation by the devil, or ascension into heaven following the resurrection  He says nothing about the institution of the Lord’s Supper or about the healing of many people possessed by demons 9

Material Included in Synoptic Gospels but Omitted by John  Jesus’ agony in Gethsemane goes unnoticed, and His charge to the apostles in the Great Commission is passed by when John concludes his account of the Lord’s life on earth  Also, the numerous parables employed by Christ to teach some of the foundation princi ples of His kingdom, and which occupy so much space in the synoptic Gospels, are totally missing from John’s asynoptic Gospel. 10

Material Included by John but Omitted in the Synoptic Gospels  The marriage feast (John 2)  Nicodemus’ visit to Jesus (John 3)  Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman (John 4)  The raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11)  The washing of the disciples’ feet by the Lord (John 13)  In-depth instruction about the role of the Holy Spirit in the apostles’ future work (John 14-16) 11

Material Included by John but Omitted in the Synoptic Gospels (See page 2)  Events which occurred during the early ministry of Jesus in Judea  Emphasis about Jewish geography, history, and religion  Details about the passing of time based on the Jewish feasts  Lengthy discourses by Jesus 12

John’s Purpose In Writing This Book… The author himself has clearly identified his purpose for us: “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:30,31) 13

A Book of Miracles…  Seven miracles in John: (2:1-11)  Changing water into wine (2:1-11) (4:46-54)  Healing the nobleman’s son (4:46-54) (5:1-9)  Healing the impotent man (5:1-9) (6:1-14)  Feeding the 5,000 (6:1-14) (6:16-21)  Walking on the water (6:16-21) (9:1-12)  Healing the blind man (9:1-12) (11:1-46)  Raising Lazarus (11:1-46)  Many other signs were not recorded (20:30,31) 14 Page 3

John’s Purpose In Writing This Book… From John’s stated purpose, we may learn that: (1) Christ’s miracles were “signs” intended to prove something to those who witnessed them-- His divinity; (2) These signs were seen and could be confirmed by many witnesses; (3) The seven recorded miracles bear some particular significance that makes each one especially potent in accomplishing Christ’s mission among men; (4) John’s purpose is pointed toward producing belief in the Sonship of Jesus; (5) Christ’s purpose is pointed toward producing eternal life in true believers. 15 Page 3

Things to Notice in John’s Gospel…  “I Am” – Mentioned 63 times  Of those, 41 times Jesus is referring to Himself  “Faith” is not mentioned in the book  “Believe” is mentioned 60 times  “Eternal” or “Everlasting” Life 17 times  It begins “the Word was God” (1:1)  It ends with Thomas’ declaration, "My Lord and my God!“ (20:28)  The deity of Jesus is woven throughout 16
