Presentation transcript:

Intervention Team / Tier III Overview Harding University High School

Objectives  Define school-based intervention/tier III team  Provide overview of intervention team (IT) process  Identify key terms  Explain teacher/referring staff responsibilities 2

3 What is an intervention /tier III team? A multi-disciplinary, problem-solving team that addresses the needs of students who are most at-risk of failure Can address academic, behavioral, speech/language, and social-emotional concerns Identifies targeted interventions in order to help the student perform successfully in the general education environment

4 Basic team members IT Administrator (Principal, AP, or Dean of Students) IT Facilitator Academic Facilitator(s) Referring Teacher Counselor(s) Parent/Guardian/Family Representative Additional staff who often attend: * Supporting teachers*Social Worker *EC teacher*Psychologist *Speech Language Pathologist*Nurse

5 Intervention Team Process The intervention team process consists of providing scientifically research-based, individualized interventions of high intensity for students who have shown minimal response to previous interventions

6 Key Terms Interventions - academic or behavioral strategies used to teach a new skill, build skill fluency, or increase application of skills Interventions always involve instruction Progress monitoring - the repeated measurement of student performance to assess skill growth We are progress monitoring skill growth Baseline – a student’s performance before intervention

7 Referring Staff Member Responsibilities Prior to an IT referral:  Tier II interventions must be implemented, and documented, for a minimum of school days before referring to IT  A baseline and four progress monitoring data points should be collected with the Tier II (pre- referral) interventions  If a student is not displaying appropriate progress in response to Tier II interventions, and is performing below peers, referral to IT should be considered

8 Referring Staff Member Responsibilities Making an IT Referral: Complete the IT Referral Form; this is a one page document to which you attach documentation of Tier II interventions and progress monitoring data Submit the referral form to the intervention team facilitator The intervention team will review the referral and attached supporting documentation, and the team will decide whether the case will be accepted, deferred, or monitored, and will notify you of the decision

9 Referring Staff Member Responsibilities Once the referral is accepted: Referring staff member completes the background information on the Focus of Concern (RE1) You will attend the meeting and participate in creating an intervention plan i.e., identifying skills, interventions, progress monitoring tools, etc. After the meeting, assigned staff members will then implement instructional interventions; interventions must be in place for school days Progress monitoring will occur weekly

10 Progress Monitoring We progress monitor growth in the identified target skill(s), we are not progress monitoring the intervention Each target skill will need to be monitored The same progress monitoring tool should be used to determine the baseline and progress monitoring data points, i.e., don’t compare Fall MAP to weekly DIBELS A minimum of 4 progress monitoring data points (after the baseline) are needed before the team can make final decisions on a student

11 Intervention Team Review Meetings After interventions and progress monitoring have been implemented with fidelity for at least 20 school days, the collected progress monitoring data is submitted to the team Intervention team will then hold a review meeting to examine the collected progress monitoring data and make decisions about next steps All IT outcome decisions must be based on gathered progress monitoring data

12 If the referral was not accepted by IT: The referring staff member will receive recommendations from the team for follow-up actions Once the suggested follow-up actions are completed, the staff member can re-submit the referral and the team will review it again and then continue the IT process

13 Key Takeaways Intervention team is a problem-solving team whose overarching purpose is to help students be successful in the general education environment Interventions and progress monitoring must be implemented for school days prior to IT referral; then more intensive interventions will be implemented for at least days during the IT process Interventions always involve instruction The collected weekly progress monitoring data will drive the intervention team decisions
