Presentation transcript:

Current state of activities and trends in the ETD’s development in Scandinavia Eva Müller Electronic Publishing Centre Uppsala University Library

Some characteristic The past five years’ dynamic development –Local issues –Local solutions –Local stakeholders –Local funding sources Current state of development –Cooperation regionally/nationally/internationally –Cooperation around specific solutions –Additional national funding sources

Projects Transition from local issues to coordinating activities SVEP project in Sweden Digital library projects in Norway, Finland, Denmark Nordic project DiVA Issues: –Interoperability, aggregate services –Long-term preservation –Promotional activities

Portals Examples of aggregate services DiVA portal (Sweden) Twelve universities, 3 countries Participants universities with much research 3000 doctoral theses Undergraduate theses – Uppsök (Sweden) 6 participants Participants mostly university collegeas 6000 undergraduate theses NoAISTER (Norway), NELLI (Finland)

Why local portals for ETDs ? Excellent way to present existing content to different audience Language specific (undergraduate theses mostly written in Scandinavian languages) Create positive competition –helps get strong local support –promotes submission by students Different focus at research universities & univ. colleges (doctoral theses & undergraduate theses)

Future? Fewer aggregated general services –Some of current services probably redundant DiVA versus national services New services –granularity of services More discrete services which can be integrated with other services (ex. student portals & ETD’s) subject specific services support concept of sets meaningful sets

Summary Aggregated services are an important step in development Regional/National services link between institutional repositories and international services such NDLTD union catalogue IR National portals <>International services –Promote positive competition on local level –Focus on local (regional, national) helps accelerate development –Generate funding resources
