Chemistry Monday, October 26, Warmup: List your 3 resources for research of your science fair topic, including at least one book. Share this with Mrs. Gall for credit today. 2.LCD projector: review of benchmarks as correlated to chapters 1 – 4, focus order; physical and chemical properties and changes, SI system, scientific notation, element vs. compound vs. mixture; continue to make progress on science fair projects. 3.Notes on above, pre-assess existing knowledge and interest/ intrinsic motivation for particular topics. 4.Engage students in creating their own learning goals for this week.

METRIC SYSTEM NOTES 10 POINTS PER SCREEN PG. 12 IN THE TEXTBOOK Each measurement consists of a QUANTITY (number) and a UNIT (label) Example: 24 mL Quantity is 24 Quantity is 24 Unit is mL (milliliters) Unit is mL (milliliters) Qualitative refers to descriptions (color, shape, etc.) Quantitative refers to numerical measurements

Metric system notes pg.2 SI: also known commonly as metric system Page 12, Table 2: 7 base units: length, mass, time, thermodynamic temperature, amount of a substance, electric current, luminous intensity Page 13, Table 3: selected prefixes (kilo, deci, centi, milli, etc) Use unit appropriate for measurement, for example, 1.3 meters instead of millimeters. (another base unit is VOLUME in liters)

Metric System Notes pg.3 CONVERSIONS- see page 13. A conversion factor is a name for the multiplication problem set up to convert one type of unit of measurement into another equivalent one. Example: 1 kg = 1000g Conversion Factor Form: 1 kg/ 1000g Conversion factors are RATIOS (numerator and denominator)
